W231 in 38 +P

Going to try this fast pistol powder with a 125 JHP in 1x brass with a standard primer & a good crimp.

1st attempt was with slower powders like HS-6 and 2400. The results were less than stellar

FYI, FWIW & YMMV, what ended up being the . 38 Special +P "accuracy load" for my Rossi 92 lever action was 110 gr JHP over IMR 4227 (with Blue Dot being a close second). As always "one size never fits all", use what you have available, etc., etc...

EDIT: Lyman #50 suggests 5.2-5.4 gr 231 for .38 Spl +P, 125 gr Hornady #35710 JHP, Federal cases, CCI 500 primers, COAL= 1.470"
max V=882 fps @18300 CUP

As with all near max load data, approach with caution!

That is a bit curious as they list HP-38, which is essentially the same thing.

I only looked for data on W231. They do list data for W244, but that doesn't help the OP.

Understood. Was just saying that I just find it odd that they list HP-38 and not W-231 as well

OP can use HP-38 data for W-231 powder (y)

The Hornady Reloading Manual #8
shows loads for 125 gr. XTP - FP & HP
with W231 powder as :
38 Special - Handgun - 4" bbl

Starting load - 4.8 grs @ 800 fps
Maximum load - 5.4 grs. @ 900 fps
+P Load - 5.7 grs. @ 950 fps

Standard primers - Winchester WSP

I have found Hornady data to be reliable and safe ... hope this helps you ...
W231 should be a good choice .

Correct, I'm using the Hornady data. Hopefully shoot some tomorrow & clock them
