I found that both my #1 & #3 shoot nice groups at 50 yards with all the bullets I've tried. They also shoot well at 100 but there is some difference (maybe 6") between a cold barrel and a warm barrel's point of impact. Both are .45-70s. What are the suggested cures? The barrel band is staying on the #3 no matter what.

Does the spacing contine to widen on the same plain with the ensuing shots after the second one or do they then fire good groups?

If the barrels only string after the first shot, I would think that free floating would help with the problem. The washer on the stock screw gambit might even work . If the stringing conitinues into follow-on shots, you might free float and add a Hicks accurizer or aset screw stabilizer in the hanger.

I have a #1a 7x57 and had the same problem. It was fixed by drilling and tapping the hanger assembly for a small set screw and then putting a SMALL dimple on the barrel to hold the set screw centered as you adjust the up pressure on the barrel. Mine took about 1 1/2 turns on the screw and the rifle settled down and shoots consistant groups slightly under an inch. Great rifle in a deer blind!

I'm not sure if I used a 4 or a 6 but its small because of where the hole must be drilled.
