Used 40 cals

I'm seeing a bunch of used 40 cals hit the market. Both locally and on line it seems theres a glut of USED 40 cals available.

Lots of Sigs and Glocks ..... and suddenly several P94 and P944s locally.

Are police departments getting away from 40 cal? Anybody else notice this or you think it's a regional thing?

Just a guess, but if they are police trade-ins, it is probably the routine periodic replacement of firearms. Who knows, they could be replacing the old 40's with new 40's.

Law of numbers hittman, I believe. When I see trade-ins, I see both 40's and 9's. More 40's because I see many many more 40's in police service. Might be different in other locals.

I believe that may be part of it. I think there are other factors though. Newer JHP technology makes the 9mm a more viable choice than it once was for many people. The other thing I believe may be driving some people to move to 9mm is the economy. 9mm practice ammunition is a lot cheaper than .40 caliber is for those of us who don't reload. That said I still have my .40's & I'm not planning on them going anywhere.

I have noticed several P91's as well and these are not trade ins but seems odd that a 10 year old gun would pop up like this.

That's because the DAK trigger is eclipsed only by the LDA in terms of being the worst trigger ever devised.

A lightly used cop 229 is still one of the best semis in existence.

Quality holds it's value, and they can't give away those DAK's to real shooters ... only to liability worried leo departments.

I have an unfired KP944 that I have been sitting on, thought of selling, but still not sure. I don't think the market/economy is all that solid to be selling....without giving it away, unless it is in high demand, with low supply. But.... if the market is flooded with .40 cals, I would imagine that might be due to police trade ins.... taxpayer funded contract purchases etc etc.

Might be a lot of people thought a .40 would be cool to have and decided they didn't like the snappiness. If there's a lot of .40 compacts on the used market that might be the reason.

I see a lot of 40s at my LGS as well and they are NOT police tradeins. I'm not sure if it's a reflection of the popularity of the 40 Cal., indicating there are a lot of them out there, or if it's a reflection of how unpleasant that caliber is to shoot for many shooters. I can say this, I definately prefer shooting either a 9mm or a .45acp.

Does anyone have any statistical data to show which caliber sells most ?

My EDC is an SR40c and I believe it's smooth shooter, my wife, a small woman, has no problem with the SR40. I have no experience with other brands of 40's, maybe the Ruger isn't as snappy as the others?
