Heading down to Georgia Southern University for my son's orientation, we passed a dead bear on the side of I-16. I've seen plenty of deer, racoons, possums, armadillos, turtles, birds, etc. but never a bear. I wonder what happened to the car that hit it? If anyone is heading east bound on I-16, look on the west side of the road between mile markers 78 and 79....

Unusual to be sure. In Western Maryland there are signs telling you to watch out for deer and bears. I too have seen many dead deer but have never encountered a bear on the road.

Actually seen one dead just north of Inglis FL last week. 1st bear roadkill ive ever seen.

I travelled up in PA last week and was amazed at the number of roadkill deer and other critters I saw. No bears though.
About 20 years ago we saw a dead sow and 2 cubs just west of downtown Hood River, OR on I-84. The first and last time I saw a roadkill bear.

No Bear but I've seen a couple of big Gators dead on the side of the road. 
5 years ago I took my motorcycle south on Hwy. 35 from Rayne, LA and it turns into Hwy. 82. It was miles upon miles of nothing but swamp until I hit the Gulf. I must have seen a dozen gators dead in the road all of them about 6'+ long. I saw a dead feral hog alongside I-85 as well as a deceased coyote today. Never saw a dead bear yet. Looking at Cholo's post I remember one foggy morning on hiway 431 in Eufaula a really big gator tried to cross the 4 lane. Several cars hit it and were damaged severely, a few running into the guardrail and one going over the guardrail.

I was actually joking with my wife the other day asking why opossum and armadillo werent on the endangered list. We seen 8-9 dead on our way to the store 10 miles away.

This evening's nightly news showed a FL (Marion Co Sheriff's Dept) LEO's dash cam video of a black bear ambling down the other side of the road the LEO was on, coming toward him.

That bear wasn't roadkill, but the LEO could have been - as he opened his vehicle's driver's door to speak to the bear.
Since the bear turned away after a brief stare-down, I'm guessin' he wasn't interested in eating something stupid................. :mrgreen:

A friend and I were on out bikes to ride the Cherohala Skyway from Tellico Plains, TN to Robbinsville, NC. We're climbing into the mtns. and it's narrow on both sides. Here comes a black bear running right down the middle of the road towards us. There was nothing we could do! About 50 yds. from us it went up the steepest bank like it was nothing :shock:

I've seen dead deer and numerous dead feral hogs on the drive into Tampa from where I live out toward Zephyrhills, FL; We DO have state game preserves and parks on both sides of the road along a lot of the roadway. The Vultures all seem to love the "free" food though.
I have seen several road killed bears. In the last several years, coyotes have seemed to get hit more frequently. The strangest I have seen is beaver, three this year.
It happens in the spring time, I went out on 2 bear road kills in 1 night. Used to go to them at some point every spring on Hwy 26 Mt Hood area. Also got bald eagle, cougar, deer, elk, etc. road kills unfortunately no big foots. Although a guy reported that he hit one on I84 near Bonneville dam 1 night.

Just finished a trip from CA to IN and counted 5 dead deer - no bears. Amost took out a calf on the road to the meteor crater in AZ - would have ruined the grandsons vacation.
The strangest road kills I ever saw were in TX on my motorcycle. I rode what was rated the #1 motorcycle road in the country--The Three Sisters. It went along many of the exotic game farms. I saw all sorts of off the charts game killed along the roadsides. Big Texas buzzards were all over them. I quickly learned to slow way the **** down when I saw them because they'd fly right when you got up on them and a couple would always fly right into your path. These are big buzzards :shock:

We've got plenty of bears in our local mountains, but in 50 years plus I've only heard of two being killed by cars around here. Didn't see either one.

My brother-in-law's dad killed two bear in one year, hunting near Fan Lake at an old dump, so I know there are bears in that area.
My co-worker who is from around Sanderson, Texas just a few days ago showed me a picture of a bear that had been ran over just outside of Sanderson. Sanderson is near the Big Bend area close to Mexico.

No bears but earlier this year I found what looked to be a Great Horned Owl dead on the road. It really bummed me out. Such a beautiful animal.

A reason people do not see many road kill bears could be like in this state. ODOT, State Police and Dept Fish/Wildlife all pick them up ASAP for testing along with any cougar and bobcats. Deer and others get removed when someone is working in the area.

I have seen this one in person and recommend that if you are ever passing through Lincoln, to take a few minutes to stop and have a look yourself. It was mounted by the local community with help from some local taxidermist, and now resided in the forest service building. When this story first hit the internet I saw all sorts of stories about it. Some said it had been hit by a log truck and others reported that it was a Harley that had hit it. While passing through Lincoln one night I was chatting with a guy sitting next to me on a bar stool---it was taco tuesday so I had to stop in. He turned out to be the Federal Biologist that is mentioned in the story. So I got the full scoop straight from the source. Lots of locals had pictures of this bear---mostly raiding their bird feeders or playing in their kids pools. Pretty amazing animal if you look at a map and check out the range that it covered over the years.

Going to my relatives in Clearfield, pa in the 80's, we would count the deer roadkill from the ohio line on interstate 80. The number was never less than 150 and usually over 200. I was amazed by the number of deer in that state. Except, they all left during deer season.coach said:
