Typical Going Rate for Ruger SA's Right Now??

Hey all,

I'd like to get some information from you guys that deal with these pistols all the time and know much more about them than I do. I'd like to get an idea of what the going rates are right now for USED Ruger SA's. What I am looking at are the following:

New Vaquero in 4 5/8" in stainless 45C
BH in 4 5/8" in stainless 45C or a Convertible in 45C/45acp which would be even better.

I wouldn't mind blue either. If there is a substantial difference in prices, that could have a way of swaying me away from the stainless. Also, can you tell me if the blued versions of either of them have an ALUMINUM grip frame or whether the grip frame is steel. I was told that only the stainless guns have a steel grip frame. Maybe its only the case on the Blackhawks. I don't know. Hopefully you can clear it up for me.

I am in Houston and if you could tell me about a shop in the area that has a good selection of SA's, both Ruger and Colt Clones, that I could go to and handle and look over some of these, that would be great too. I haven't found any yet here. Most have just 1 or 2 and that's it. Naturally I haven't been to all that many shops though. I am willing to drive say 75 miles or so to go to a good shop that has selection and good prices.

Up here, we're at $600-650 for a new new vaquero. $50-100 less for used. I think $450 is a fair price. Those that want $550 for a used NV are crazy. But people will buy used to save $10 sometimes.

Roughly same price for a Blackhawk. Haven't seen a convertible in a gunshop for a long, long time. The NV's should be all steel grip framed, and the blued Blackhawks should have the aluminum grip frame. If you want to do away with the steel grip frame, I'll be looking to do away with an aluminum grip frame soon.

All New Vaqueros and New Model FLAT TOP Blackhawks (mid size and large cyl frames)have blue steel grip frames of the XR3 size.

All New Model standard large frame blued Blackhawks have alum alloy grip frames of the XR3-RED size.

In Houston, Collectors Firearms generally has a large selection of everything imaginable. Prices can be high but sometimes a good deal can be found. I've been gone from Houston for 5 years or so but Tomball Pawn & Jewelry, at 249 and 2920, was typically the best pricing on new guns. Generally had a lot of Ruger revolvers when I shopped there.

I have been to Collecors Firearms 1 time, incredible place for sure. The only thing is that they act like they don't really want to show you things unless you are serious about buying right now. I'll definitely check out Tomball Pawn....that's close to me. Thank you for the tips.

On the frame sizes, are there any BH's being made now on the smaller frame size like what was made in the 1950's? I watched a review by Gunblast where he mentioned a new Flat Top was being made on the smaller frame size that was made in the 1950's. This review is a couple years old, or more. It was on a Lipseys (I think) special FT BlackHawk. Are any of the current BH's being made on this frame size?

If I am being confusing I apologize. If needed I'll post a link to the Gunblast review so you all can see what I am talking about.

Not confusing, no apology needed.

No, there are no NM standard (with ribbed rear sight) Bkachawks made on the mid frame (Single Six size guns are the only small frames).

I'm familiar with the Gunblast article and it is accurate.

The New Vaqueros (except the recently introduced 44 mag) and the NM Flat top Blackhawks (in non-magnum cartridges), are mid frames and they are exactly dimensionally (within manufacturing tolerances of course) the same as the pre 1963 old model mid frame only chambered in 357 mag.

In fact OM and NM mid frame cylinders will interchange (with the usual slight fitting from gun to gun of course).

Around here, about $450 seems common for used Vaqueros and Blackhawks.

New Mexico has a depressed economy, it has always had one, used Rugers in the gun shops are equal to if not more than on GunBroker. People here are so poor we can't even afford free stuff. This past week I was looking at a SBH 7.5" for $525. that was not very pristine and the single sixes are almost as much as new.

Vaqueros & Blackhawks "standard" models/cal. in my area go for around:
Used blue $500 stainless $550
New blue $575 stainless $625

Most Bisley models go for more.

I recently sold 2 used blue/case hardened 44-40 vaqueros for $525 each & 2 used stainless 44-40s for $600 each. The stainless sold in 2 hrs.

I also paid more than that for a pair of Stainless Bisley Blackhawks in .357. Pretty rare birds, but are worth it to me. Might want to handle a couple Bisley models as they feel much different than the plow handles.
