Two Marlins

I came across a couple of lever guns at the local gun shop the other day.

Top is a Model 39A Golden Mountie from 1969:

And a Model 1894S in 44 mag from 1989:

Neither gun is perfect, but both are in pretty nice condition...

The Mountie is the nicer of the two. Marlins aren't exactly scarce on the used market, but I don't often see the 39A, and a Mountie in this condition is pretty rare in my experience.

Nice find. Pre-Remington Marlins are starting to get spendy right now. The 357's are oing for crazy prices on GB.

Yes, kind of interesting to see the old "micro-groove" rifles in such demand after being panned for so long. I've personally never had an issue with the micro-groove and my .22s with that rifling have been excellent shooters.

I've been looking for a .41 mag 1894, but never seem to run across one - I do have a .357 and another .44. Nice, handy little carbines and I think this .44 is going to be my new "home defense" rifle.

I used to have a Mountie that I paid $225 for about 12 years ago. My brother has 3 sons and the oldest wanted a lever action to shoot. I "loaned" it to them to shoot until they could find something permanent... At least I know it has been used over the years. I would have had it locked up in my gun safe.

I also sold a 39A at the local gun show today. Serial number had a "J" prefix. It had the fat forearm and I prefer the slimmer version and still have one.

Typical Mountie prices around here are $400 and up depending on condition.

i have a 55 mountie, and i sold a 44 mag 1894 to fund a 357. i am a marlin fan... big time! those are nice scores!

I also like the Marlin lever guns. They are a nice compliment to revolvers in like calibers. Currently have one in .22, .32MAG & .41MAG. Still looking for one in .357 at the right price. Making a trip to Texas next month on a hog hunt and I think the .41 will go along with my Ruger Hunter in .41.

Nice looking trio. A little surprising to me how pricey the .357s have gotten on the gun auctions.

Yep, the .41 should be a good combo for the pigs. That is one of the guns on my wish list.

Very nice. I have a 1970 39A Marlin Centennial, given to me for Christmas by my dad when I was 12 years old. Also have a 1978 1895 in .45-70 and a 1969 RC in .35 Remington. "Need" an 1894 in .44 mag when I find a pre-crossbolt safety example. Have had two of them and let them slip away. Long-time Marlin fan.

WJ: that is quite a herd of long guns - nice! I now understand why I have such difficulty finding tang sights for my Winchesters and Marlins as they clearly all reside in Texas...

Yea I kind of like those tang sights. For close CAS targets I leave out the insert and it acts like a ghost ring. I don't even notice it being there. Just shoot it like a shotgun. For long range put in the insert required for the range shot. Military rifles have peep sights for a reason :wink:
Won our CAS Turkey shoot with them. 2" dia. target at 75-100 yards shooting standing

Marlin fan here too. Right now, I only have 1 and it's a 1894 in 32-20.

Nice find on a couple very nice rifles.
