Many yars ago, when I was just a little tyke, maybe eight or nine years old, my Dad and I were in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee for a family reunion. We we at the house of my Dad's cousin on the Saturday before, and the grown-ups were tsalking grown-up stuff. I was sort of bored and left out. My Dad's cousin saw me and took me into the kitchen. From behind the door she took a .22 rifle, and she got a box of .22 Shorts from the pie safe and gave them to me. She said, "Why don't you take this and go down to the pond and shoot those turtles." I gladly did so.
Notice she never said "Do you know how to use this?" or "Will you be real careful?" or "Don't shoot your eye out." Just, "Take this .....and go shoot."
Wish I could get my hands on that rifle now. It was an old Remington Rolling Block .22 R.F. And, yeah, I busted a few turtles.
