Trip to Boulder Colorado

I'm headed out to Boulder for a couple of days next week and am looking for things to do while I am there. I've never been to Colorado and am hoping those familiar with the area can offer suggestions. Things to see, places to go, nightlife, restaurants etc. What should I not miss?

I live on the western side of the mountains and don't get to Boulder very often but there was a cool gun shop that was on TV but forget their name.

I live about fifteen miles from Boulder and the real question is what do you
prefer?

If it's not snowing, I'd say to go up to Estes Park and wonder around. If it
is not too bad, you can go up into Rocky Mountain National Park for some
REAL scenery (probably some elk and such, also).

If you like people with a genuine case of the stupids, go to the Univ. of CO
campus in Boulder.

National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) has an amazing
installation on the South West side of town (peak wind gust measured
there has been (IIRC) about 145mph). Gets windy in Boulder.
(Some speculate that is when City Council exhales) :roll:

Don't miss the Pearl Street mall, running East and West of Broadway.

Night-life you will have to ask someone else about.
OH! Flagstaff House is expensive, buy last I heard quite good.

Just a word to the wise....

They think a whole lot of the homeless potheads... but nothin' of multi-thousand dollar tourists... in the town. (Me and my Pards spend that.)

Just try urinatin' in that lil' bitty creek... at 3:00am... that runs through the middle of that pot-burg. Bunches of homeless potheads sleepin' 'round that lil'-bitty creek... never like I ever seen in four lustrums before.... and me with too much buzzolas... under my belt... and up-right sleep in the passenger's seat of the truck. The smell of the pot was so strong outside the truck... just almost sickenin'.

And I was not the driver. Got out... relieved myself in the darkness... and got arrested. Bassackwards... gosh... don't know what else to say... at 3:00am.

Cost me $300. Hay out of my horses' mouths... and a trailhead ridin' delay. Won't be goin' huntin' over close to there... anytime soon.

Thanks for the replies.

My interests in life are Harleys and Single Action revolvers, I grew up in Florida so my preference is to not freeze to death while on vacation. :)

That being said, the Flat Irons have been suggested (along with other hikes) but the freezing to death thing may prevent that from happening although it looks like the weather could be in the 30's while I'm there and I can survive that.

I've never seen the Rockies, sitting in a chair with some good bourbon staring off in the distance has crossed my mind. I'm leaning more toward experiencing some of the local "Flavor" including the National Western Stock Show. Unfortunately I will miss the Cowboy mounted shooting finals. :(

I highly recommend a visit to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park....very beautiful. You just drive north of Boulder about 1/2 hr. On I-25 to Hwy 34(Loveland) then go West about 1/2 hr, 45 min and you will be there. Spectacular scenery nestled in the Mountains. On I-25 just North of hwy 34 at Crossroads Blvd (it's the next exit after why 34) there is a HUGE Harley Davidson Dealership. HUGE!!

So if you want to see all that I would drive up I-25 to Crossroads Blvd West to the Harley Dealership...spend some time there...get directions to Nordy's BBQ restaurant...nearby, and yummy, have lunch there then go west on Hwy 34 up to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park. A really nice day trip.

Or. Go to the Harley Dealership, run up to Estes and RMNP spend the day and on your way back to I-25 run over to Nordy's for dinner. Either way it's a good day.

I live in Fort Collins, about 10 miles north of the Harley Dealership so I am quite familiar with the whole area. I LOVE Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park.

If you do go to Estes Park be sure to keep your eyes peeled while in town.....there is a herd of elk who live in and around town, often by the golf course or the famous Stanley Hotel. The elk just wander around and are seen frequently. Visit the Stanley Hotel to see a bit of history and see where the Movie The Shining was filmed. The Stanley was built by the guy who invented the Stanley Steamer car! It's a beautiful property.

If you have never been through a brewery, the Coors plant has a FREE pretty nice self guided tour. They also give you 3 free beers. :D

It's been too long since I spent some time there, so I can't really suggest anything. We did stay in a very nice, old hotel. Fancy schmantzy (sp?) room and all.

If you take the brewery tour, the one takeaway for me was that Coors and Keystone are the very same beer. So, if Coors floats your boat, buy Keystone and save a buck (or whatever).

Should be a great time.

Well dang VQ: Maybe we should rethink our ballpark to visit this year. If you peruse the forum you will see my wife and I have decided to see the Cubs this year but the Rangers also play the Rockies. It is in the middle of July (the Cubbies game), can you talk us into coming to Colorado instead or as well? We try to visit a different NL ballpark every year and we picked Chicago but Denver could work as well. My airline flies to Denver a lot. I have wanted to try some of the new breweries there. Hell, maybe we will do both. Rangers v Rockies Aug. 8th and 9th.. Would you be interested? Meet a couple of hick Texans who travel. Would love to meet, if you want.

I have been to the Rockies Stadium and it is a very nice venue. Weather here in Colorado is very pleasant year round. Summers can be hot, and sun fierce, as we are over 5,000 feet altitude closer to the sun here on the front range, but humidity is next to nothing. Denver has some nice micro breweries but here in Ft. Collins there are LOTS of micro breweries and a big Budweiser brewery. The tours are great fun. I do not drink beer, but have gone on some of the tours. There is plenty to see and enjoy out here. I moved to Colorado from my home state of Minnesota and have never regretted the move. Winters are mild compared to what I grew up with in the frozen tundra. August is one of our hotter months but since it is dry heat and very low humidity and it ALWAYS cools off at night I find the weather pleasant. Locals here start to complain that it is humid if it gets over 30% humidity! Ha! In Minnesota it would be 90 degrees and 80 percent humidity in the summers and never cool off at night. Any time you go into the mountains expect it to be at least 10 degrees cooler than in the cities here on the front range. Have I convinced you yet, Karl? It would be fun to meet up....just give advance notice so I can schedule my work. VQ aka Cathy. PS......wonderful trout fishing nearby as well!

Was there to assist with the flood recovery efforts in 2013. Was spit on, cussed out, and shoved off of a sidewalk on three separate occasions. All instances were related to the fact that I was walking or happened to be parked in a bicyclists way. It's not real high on my list of places to return too...never if I can help it.

Bicyclists in Colorado believe they OWN the roads.....lots of hostility on their part vs. pedestrians as well as motor vehicle operators. It is an escalating issue. Sorry you had to experience this while you were here to help. For the most part Coloradoans are a friendly group of folks.

We were in Estes Park and RMNP just a couple of days ago. Estes was somewhat crowded, we figured it was due to being new year's weekend. RMNP has many roads that are closed until spring, we got up to Bear Lake and walked out to the middle on the ice. RMNP is always pretty, no matter what time of year you are there.
