For part of his 13th birthday present, I took my nephew shooting for the day.

We stopped for pizza on the way to the range:

We drove my Mustang convertible because it was a such a great day:

His dad had bought him a Ruger 10/22 a couple years ago and I gave him a red dot sight for it awhile back. We sighted it in and he had fun shooting his Ruger with it. When I told him we would go shooting as part of his birthday present, I loved it when he asked, "Can I bring MY gun?" Of course!

Then he fired my Ruger SR22P:

He really liked the Ruger .22 pistol!

He'd never fired a .45 before so I had him try my Dan Wesson CBob and he loved it. He had no problem with the recoil either.

Then we moved down to the 100 yard line and gave my Savage 114 Classic .30-06 a try. His first shot hit the X smack dab in the middle. His second shot was a little high but he admitted he flinched it. After two shots he was done with the .30-06. He had wanted to shoot a "scoped" rifle for the first time. He just wasn't expecting the recoil to be so much.

Then we hopped over to the trap range. He had never fired a shotgun before and I figured his great grandfather's 1955 Browning Double Automatic would be a great start:

He hit 11 out of 25 clays his first time out!!! Most of them were toward the end of his run so he was hitting them pretty consistently. Ahhh, youth, quality vision, and fast hand/eye coordination!

We had a great day together!

He had a smile on his face the whole ride home in the convertible.

I talked to my sister and her husband afterwards and they said he hadn't stopped talking about his day with his uncle. He was showing the pictures and videos to everyone that would listen. His older cousins were impressed and a little bit jealous, which he really enjoyed!

Here's a video of him shooting the SR22P (just click on the photo to make it play):

Now that was a great way to start a Monday morning! There's nothing quite like taking a young one shooting :D

An outstanding way to spend his birthday! Very cool. It's things like this that kids will cherish forever. Good memories and loads of fun. Do it more often if you can!
BTW, judging by your pic,, are you related to Jeff Hoover? :D

Very nice way to spend the say together. I take my son shooting all the time, he loves it. Kids learn to respect guns when they are taught the right way.
