To my great joy, I just brought home a tang-safety M77R in 7mmRM. The metal on this rifle is absolutely flawless, except for one tiny (smaller than a pinhead) spot of rust on the barrel. I have used 0000 steel wool for rust removal on other guns, but don't want to apply it to the mirror blue of this one, and the area affected is so small. What do you recommend?

Thanks.
Jeff

I think I might let it soak in some Kroil for a while and then try a patch or pencil eraser. Some have said using the edge of a real copper penny to scrape off the rust, but I think I'd go patch/eraser first.

My kid used some vinegar to soak some rusty bolts in and it removed the rust, not sure if it would damge blueing or not?

Hoppe's Elite cleaner is great for removing rut.

IMHO, vinegar is not what you want. It's acid and will take the finish right off.

Try a regular lead pencil. Rub the lead end over the rust, then wipe off. That got me through inspection once on an M1 rifle.

A drop of any "rust" preventative type oil on the pit and use the edge of a REAL copper penny and go after just that spot of crude/rust.........or use brass/bronze wool ( fine) and rust oil and gently wipe the spot, if its just a "pin head" (your quote)can't be too bad..................if need be, a tiny drop of a GOOD cold blue, we use 44-40, and just touch/dab that 'spot' , wipe off ,oil 'er down..............seen bigger and worse "imperfections" from about ANY gun company from time to time over all these years.
