Time for a Gold Label thread!

It is a gun that seldom gets a lot of traffic on this forum anymore. And for understandable reasons, for those of us lucky enough to own them are in a somewhat rarified and privileged category.

It's time to start getting ready for the upcoming dove season in a couple of weeks. I like to shoot a few rounds of sporting clays, and take the old thrower out to practice some crossers and angling from behind shots to warm up. I seem to seldom carry it as a brush tromping upland gun anymore but sure do like taking it out to the dove fields for the first couple weeks of September, with an old leather English shellbag carrying a couple of boxes of high velocity 1 oz handloaded shotshells (although lately I have really been getting good results from ~1400fps 7/8 oz loads).

Anyone planning on using their Gold Label for dove season?

just saw one at a pawn shop that someone just dropped off.......wish i'd met the poor sucker out in the parking lot before he went in.
 
I believe I'm going to take my Gold Label out for dove season again this year... It's a lot easier to tote around all day than the Red Label.

I'm very lucky to have the Gold Label, and kind of wonder it I shouldn't just let it sit in the safe... But why have it if I'm never going to enjoy shooting it? :)
 
I don't hunt doves, but do use my Gold Label, a pistol-gripped one that my brother gave me for a retirement gift, for hunting quail and shooting stocked pheasants on a preserve once a year. I have used it for wild pheasants in NYS and Kansas, as well.

I could never have afforded a Gold Label, but was VERY happy to have this one as a gift. My brother got himself a straight-gripped one at the same time; this was when a real-world price for them was about $1750 each.

Don't take it chukar hunting because of the likelyhood of damaging the barrels on the rocks, but did get a double on chukars with it one day two years ago when quail hunting. Only the second double on chukars I've had in my life.

I love the gun, partly because of how I got it!

Yeah, that worked.

The 6 of you that have them should form a "Group". ;-)

Picket, I have a 28-bore RL that I shoot better than any other shotgun (what I really mean is that it shoots better than me....). My main quail gun. If you get one, really consider the 28" barrel; handles better IMO.

IMO the GL is too light for waterfowl. It is balanced OK for them and strong enough to handle heavy loads. But you won't like shooting 3" magnums in it all morning. (I think I have "Ruger" permanently stamped on my right shoulder from a morning of pass shooting a couple of years ago....).
 
Took my GL to a winter Tower Shoot a couple of years ago. Wore a shoulder pad under my coat. After 3 boxes+ of high brass, I had a terrific bruise on my shoulder. What a blast! Great gun.
My favorite Ruger discontinued product. :wink:
 
They came. I saw only one. I waited for the 20 ga. They went that-a-way. I pouted. Should have got the 12. As light as they are only light (and fast) loads would be of much interest. jack
 
i did not buy a Gold label when I had the opportunity to get one for about $1000. kept holding out for a 20 gauge, which never happened, so I bought a Gold Label last year, paying over twice as much for it.

Love that shotgun!
I am not much of a wingshot, but I want to look great in the field, so I carry a fine-looking Gold label. Really makes me look like a better shot than I am. I figure now if I take up smoking a pipe, my status will really improve dramatically! Maybe also a tweed jacket with elbow patches?

WHAAAT??? $1000? I bought my Gold Label after seeing only 2 ($2200-2500) over a period of three years. When I found it NIB 2 days after arriving at the dealers for $1795, my credit card flew out so fast it sparked!

I don't have the Gentleman tweeds, but I did buy the Ruger Leathers (Galco Butt pad and forend grip cover with Ruger logo). I only wish I had bought the Ruger-logo leather case then.

I'd sure like to see Jeff in a Deerstalker cap and tweeds though, with a pipe sticking out of those whiskers. Watch out for embers.
 
Jeff, I found that I'm a much "better shot" if I put the Skeet and IC tubes in my GL....can't hit crap (let alone quail) with the tighter tubes..... And 1 oz. skeet loads of 7 1/2s help too; I actually get a denser pattern with those lighter loads.

When I'm in real tough terrain like a canyon, I put the Mod tube in the left barrel and leave the Skeet in the right, since sometime that second shot has to be at longer range. (Don't imagine you have a lot of box canyons where you are, tho....).

My advice: forget the pipe and tweeds and put your money in Ruger stock and Deet!

I wish I could own Ruger stock. That stuff is better than Gold!

I've seen but two. handled only one of them and although priced fairly at the time ($1300 or so) I passed as it wasn't the stock style I wanted. Snoozed and loozed. Took me many years to land a Trap Model though so I can't give up hope. :)
 
I never had the opportunity to see a Gold Label in person good thing too. My wife give me that look when I ordered the SS Red Label a few years back. Hunting in salt marshes it was the gun I needed most.

I would really like to see a photo of you decked out in silk shirt & tie, jacket, plus fours and wellies.

ETA: And the pipe!
 
Yes, I was also fortunate to obtain a Gold Label with the Straight (English) stock.
I must admit however, that it is technically a “used gun”. It came that way from Ruger with a serial number of U460-013XX.
