With the atmospheric river washing over the PNW I spent some time in the shop filling orders for wine barrel stave coat racks. This was one of them before I took it apart and boxed it up for shipping to Nebraska. Just something different we make and sell.

Nice-looking rack. Did you have to re-steam the staves to get the shape you wanted? I have made a bunch of racks, but in the traditional style.

No sir, these staves are straight from a wine barrel so they have that curve built in them. Actually they are pretty challenging to work with because not only are they curved like you se but they are tapered or narrower at the ends and since they make a round barrel the edges are at a bevel. For most projects you have to use a jig to square one edge up then carefully run them over the saw with the straight edge against the fence to get the other side untapered and unbeveled.

drawknives, spokeshaves, block planes and handsaws and a "shaving bench" are the tools I use for staves...interesting stuff can be made from these old barrel staves. Nice work on the hat rack Robb!

Interesting stuff. I also like the bike. Years ago I bought a whole wine barrel at Home Depot for something like $40. I’ve carted it all over, and right now it’s on the back patio just hanging out.

And funny enough, it isn’t hollow inside, it’s got some sort of support structure. It’s heavy as anything and really obnoxious to move. I always thought they were just big hollow containers.

Actually wine barrels are hollow in side Kevin. When I get one it is a few minute job to pull the 2 or3 retaining pins on each band then lift the bands off and once the bands are gone it falls apart like a big banana peel. The insides of the staves have that nice wine red color and the outer surfaces have the marks from the steel bands so they have some neat character as well. When I make the center piece candle holders I smooth the outer surfaces up but leave the stains from under the bands for some variation in color. You can see the stained areas which were underneath the bands on this center piece.
