A prison without bars, but just as effective. This is what Utopia looks like. :x

It’s already 1984 in China.

For the last year, the people of Hangzhou, China – a city of more than nine million – have had every moment of their lives tracked.

“City Brain,” an artificial intelligence system that interlinks with a city’s infrastructure was installed in October 2016, through a partnership with Alibaba and Foxconn.

In an effort to optimize Hangzhou and make urban life easier, the system tracked everything from robberies to traffic jams and learned the city’s unique patterns and needs.

Residents were also tracked through their activity on social media. Their commutes, purchases, interactions and movements were all learned and absorbed by the AI database.

“In China, people have less concern with privacy, which allows us to move faster,” Xian-Sheng Hua, an AI manager at Alibaba, said during a presentation at the World Summit AI meeting in early October.

And, according to New Scientist, the system works.

Crime, car crashes and rush hour traffic is all down. The system can predict traffic jams and adjust the traffic lights in order to avoid congestion before it begins. It can also keep track of criminals, making it easier for police to catch them. And it automatically notifies authorities when it detects so much as an illegally parked car.

The system is also hooked up to residents’ cell phones and can alert them of bad weather or traffic jams and offer safer routes.

City Brain has apparently been such a success that it’s already being packaged for other cities across China and, eventually, the world.

Then add in a cashless society and they know where, what and when.

90% of the bits and pieces are already in place in the USA, and many other countries. It's not just cameras. It's also that cell phone, computer, shot spotter, credit/debit card, gas station, grocery check out, satellites, airborne surveillance craft, license plate readers, car (GPS), and numerous other things - all tied together to track everything you do and maybe even everything you think. This system ties it all together. And it's every Governments wet dream & every citizens nightmare.

Yep, it really is already here. A while back I read an article about Google. They said that Google can predict where you are and where you are going better than 90% of the day. They even implied that they kinda know where you will be at a given point in time before you have begun that process. Of course, I say this while typing on a Android tablet and having an Android phone in my pocket.
Big data will be both a phenomenal opportunity for both good and evil. Of course, everyone in power will only be looking out for own good. Cough, cough.

Many folks say they won't participate in such a society and claim they will just go off-grid. But governing bodies will simply prevent those folks from participating in mainstream, established society. Want any kind of loan? Nope. Not without all the AI hookups. Want to buy groceries with cash? Nope. No cash accepted, and trying to pay cash will become illegal. And indicate "subversive" behavior. Want health care? Nope. Must have a valid ID from "them". Want to buy a home or property? Sorry. You need "our" ID system in place. The list goes on. Tried starting a bank account since 9/11 without government ID? Sorry....I'm waiting for mandatory RFID chips to be required at birth before a newborn will be allowed to go home with parents. Claims will be made that the chips will avoid the need for carrying ID, passports, driver's licenses, check books, etc., and help prevent a child from being abducted. To refuse will become legislatively identified as "child neglect and endangerment" , and hey! The local animal shelter chips pets now to facilitate safe return when lost. Sorta setting the stage for comparisons. It's coming I really think. Don.

Sounds like the plot to the Stallone movie "Demolition Man". Chaos and grunge won out in the end.

Unfortunately we are doing this to ourselves deliberately, in the name of "convenience".

In the OP’s report, it says “Residents were also tracked through their activity on social media”

But, in China this is already VERY limited. “Residents” don’t have a lot of social media they can use to begin with.

Even in cities like London, where George Orwell wrote “1984” the city is overrun with CCTV cameras recording a private citizen’s every move.

I would say artificial intelligence has already started tracking...everyone...

I was at the NIVIDA GPU conference this year. I walked past a booth manned by Chinese folks that had a camera scanning the crowd as hundreds of people streamed by the booth. It was capturing most of the people as they went by, and posting information about them as they went by such as 6’0” white male 50 years of age. My numbers were exactly right, and I thought I had a baby face. I stopped to talk to the rep, and asked if this system could be linked to a database of known people and do a search of most likely matches. He smiled and said in China this system list the names of people they scan. Anyone that thinks there is any privacy in this country is fooling them themselves and no one else.

Tallbald, you are more right than you think. Which is very, very scary.

My new job is teaching. This week we talked internet safety. As in watching your digital footprint and limiting what “big brother” is able to see of you...and how much “they” can see you. It is just the really scary. Without blocking the internet 100% it isn’t foolproof....

Scary, and there's probably nothing anyone can do now to reverse this trend.

No "probably" about it. It would be impossible short of a mass die off of 6 or 7 billion people.

Things where not perfect in our lifetimes but it's possible we all are have lived at just about the height of our civilization before it turns into something similar to the book 1984. We where lucky !

I think there are already people working on that.

Nope. Never work in Denver. Anyone that has been on the highway in
Denver, during the "rush hour" (from 06:00 to 22:00) knows THAT will
not work. Far too many flat-landers driving around here.
Then add SNOW!

Saw an article a couple of weeks ago about a "tech" company who implants a chip in the right hand of all employees (voluntarily, of course). This chip is essentially an ID device, but it allows entry into the facility, logging into the company network, and even use of the vending machines in the lunch room. What goes unsaid, of course, is that it also records the date and times of arrival and departure for payroll confirmation, etc.

It's just a matter of time. As we Olde Phartes leave the workplace and eventually die off, the next generations will buy into all this because "cool".
