Thinking about trying IDPA. Crazy to use P95?

Okay, I've fought it for awhile but the urge to try IDPA continues to grow stronger. I think I may go check out a match first then go back and give it a whirl.

Having said that, I really want to use my P95. I have no rationale for this other than I love the way the 95 feels in my hand and it seems the sort of pistol IDPA was made for.

Am I crazy or what? I know there are Glocks and Sigs and all that probably better suited for it. Heck, the SR9 might even be better, but the 95 just seems right.

Aside from that, is it hard for the average range shooter to get going in IDPA? Interested to hear what you IDPA shooters have to say...

What gun do you carry (if any)?
Use that one if you want to use the pistol "IDPA was made for".

Other than a car gun I really don't carry. And I just mean that it seems like the P95 is a natural fit considering the idea behind IDPA.

IDPA is for fun and practice with whatever you'd need to shoot in an emergency. If that's your P95, then shoot it. Just relax, have fun and enjoy the day with other shooters. You'll meet new people and make new friends!

+1 Use what you have. The key is to have fun. That being said you will get some looks and a comment or two since you don't have a Glock or 1911. IDPA isn't really that hard to get started in. I shot IDPA with a 625 (then they changed the rule and revolvers had to have a 4" or less barrel)
But I decided to opt out anyway. For me IDPA quit being fun after about 6 matches becauce of all the "Tactical Jonnies" and some of their stages.
I teach firearms for a federal agency and was trying to just shoot for fun but some of the personalities made it not fun. IDPA folded up here shortly after. I'm sure the attitutdes and ego's had some play in that.

Your area might be different and I wish you good luck. A suggestion though is IPSC now has a Production class which you could run your P95 in. IPSC has gotten much more friendly IMHO. I have shot it for 15 years and have seen it change for the better.

Good luck though

Ive shot IDPA with my P89DC, P94DC and P95DC several times. You can shoot well with many different weapons as long as you are well practiced with it and it functions 100%. The looks and comments will increase when you shoot the stage faster than others with "better" than Ruger equipment. I have turned several people onto Ruger pistols while shooting IDPA after placing well with them. The metal Ruger P guns recover fast and have very little felt recoil which seemed to help a bit too.

Just remember to relax and focus on combining speed with accuracy and you will get better each time. You can practice your draw and tactical reloads while at home without firing a shot also. I always found it interesting how no matter how many times I watch others shoot the scenario I always seem to half ass "lose" it when its my turn and the timer buzzes

If you like the gun and are comfortable with it, use it!! All the better when you beat someone who spent twice as much as you did. Also, beware of that one guy in the field who insists on using a revolver...

I shot IDPA with my SR9c last week. Beat most of those Glock and Sig guys.

My take is that IDPA is much more open to people shooting whatever they carry.

I also shoot USPSA with my M&P Pro and the Production class there is 95% Glocks/S&W M&Ps.

Thanks for the helpful info. guys. I think I'll give the P95 a shot (no pun intended).

I agree with Meeko - use what you got and have fun. It ain't about beating the other guy. Enjoy yourself and then go have a beer with some other gun fanatics...Ruger, S&W, Glock, Ford or Chevy whatever.. who cares.. that's my take.
