I don't normally wear my hearing aid(yeah, I know I'm supposed to wear it all the time) but had to quit early to get cleaned up for Grand Daughter's band concert and just sitting here poking keyboard buttons waiting for my only meal of the day so I stuck the widget in my ear so I didn't forget it later. I kept hearing some little tinkle-tinkle sound and finally realized it's the wind chime on the back porch. Huh, didn't really know it made sounds like that.

All my life I've had severe hearing loss. Years ago I bought these expensive hearing muffs that enhance sounds. I first tried them at one of the TX RF meets and heard more birds than I've ever heard. I tried them at home and kept hearing white noise. It would only go away if I turned them all the way down, but what good was that?
Years went by and I decided to try them again while watching a movie on TV. White noise, again. I don't know at what point I realized that I was hearing the cooling fans in my computer tower. I turn the computer on in the AM and off when I go to bed. The fans run even if it's asleep. I had no idea you could hear those things LOL
I've put off getting hearing aids. I've told family and friends that I've always lived in a quiet world and don't know if I'd like all the sounds out there that I've never heard, like a dog barking 1/4 mile away. I'm not sure I could adjust to what would be a noisy world to me.
I have a feeling I'd just toss them in a drawer like we all do with holsters we thought would be really cool, but...

Once I got hearing aids the electronic lock on my safe made a beep sound every time I push a button! How weird is that?
And the dash in my truck had a rattle.
And the ceiling fan in the kitchen squeaked.
But my 9 year old grandson told his Mom that Grandpa doesn’t ignore him any more! Bless his heart .... he had no idea I never heard him so, we had a good chat.
Mine are Phonak brand and will admit they were expensive. But you can adjust different volume levels on your smart phone or computer. There’s a small hand held remote that allows me to kill background noises if we’re at a wedding reception or other party.
I ponied up for re-chargeable so no need to mess with batteries. I plug these in at bed time and they’ll run about 2 days on a charge. I spent about $200 to avoid the need for batteries.

I had to send my back in vis the VA because one of the rechargeable ones for the left side QUIT after about 2 hours. They saud 2-3 weeks before I get them back; I just turn up the TV sound and all is fine !!

"why is everyone yelling"? We told him that we were talking at the level we had to
before he got his h-aids. (I think he turned them down a bit after that).

the manufacturer to see if there is a setting you can use to "cure" that. :wink:

I'd be using mine more if I was working FTF but since I'm working phone only and use a single ear bud for the phone, the hearing aid goes unused except for special occasions. When I went in for the hearing test, the audiologist was surprised at how well I could read lips. HUH? Guess I'd self taught that skill.
At the band concert, I was able to hear GD's flute playing between the trumpets and trombones and caught most of the words of the choir singing.

I have had hearing aids for years but finally have a set that truly work. Sitting reading at the computer the other day and heard a tic-tic-tic. Wondered what I was hearing. Come to find out it was a clock second hand sound. Each second, tic-tic-tic.
I've had Phonak aids that the V.A. issued me a year or two ago that work very well. Other ones over the years from the V.A. were not as good or were too uncomfortable to wear for more than a short time. Most of the time I feel I am OK without wearing them, but when I put the aids on I always realize how much I am missing when without them. One of the best features of the hearing aids is the gadget that the V.A. issued to me with the aids. It attaches to the TV and transmits the audio directly into my hearing aids. I no longer have to keep the volume way up, in fact, I can turn the volume of the TV speakers to "0" and listen perfectly well to the sound coming right to the hearing aids. If my wife goes to bed early I can watch TV comfortably and she doesn't hear a sound coming from the living room. I can also have my Iphone audio go right to the hearing aids using Bluetooth which is a really nice feature, letting me keep the phone in my pocket and not have to hold it up to my ear.
One of the main times that I do not wear the hearing aids is when wearing a helmet for riding my motorcycle. Putting the helmet on can dislodge the aids, and taking the helmet off ALWAYS will pull the aids right out of my ears and likely fall on the ground. Plus, without the hearing aids the wind noise on the bike is not as loud and a good thing.

I'm giving that some thought. I can get an adaptor to connect to my android phone but would still need to use a separate mike. Advantage would be phone in both ears negative would be not hearing outside sounds. I think I'll be able to get another free hearing aid this fall (maybe go with an "in the ear" unit) and would just switch to a headset rather an earbud for the phone.
I'm fairly sure that my work will return to FTF later this year so having both ears working will be an improvement.

Apparently a frequent oops according to the Miracle Ear staff. I did that once w/o causing a problem but was told not to let it happen often.

I've always looked at people's mouths when they're talking, though I can't read lips per se. I obviously do more of it than I think I do because I'm lost when someone is wearing a mask. Put them also behind plexiglass and it's useless.Mobuck said:

When I was tested by The VA for my hearing aids, it was the most comprehensive hearing test I have ever had. At one point, the audiologist told me to repeat words she would say to me. She held a piece of paper over her face so I could not see her lips. BIG difference not being able to see the lips move!! This is a test they use to see if you can discern words that sound similar. They gave me the Phonak aids also. When I had my annual visit with the VA last month (to stay current in the system), the PA said that in 6 months she'll schedule me for another hearing test since it's been 5 years and I might need an update.

Re: the bluetooth feature for the phone. I have that with my hearing aids and iPhone. I have no difficulty discerning 'outside' sounds while talking on the phone, and it's a really useful feature. Only thing I have to remember is to shut off the bluetooth when video chatting (on the phone) with the grandkids, as otherwise, my wife is excluded from the conversation!
Yeah, Medicare doesn’t pay much on hearing aids or vision either. Had a free hearing test that showed I was borderline needing hearing aids. I live alone. The dog doesn’t care how loud the TV is, I don’t often watch anyway. I do more research on my phone. So I have opted to not get hearing aids.
