Hi,

I'm torn: should I share that story with a couple of people I know, or not? Problem is, I'm not sure they'd react like Kyle and "give up" the appropriation, or just give me the same dumb look a buddy does when you say something to him and he doesn't have his hearing aids in. "I only need them to hear at the higher decibels" he tells us, then gives this blank look as we laugh, like he's not included in a private joke.

Back to the OP, I was once told teaching is one of the great things people can do, because they can impart every single bit of knowledge they have to untold numbers of students, and not lose a speck of it themselves. I look at cultural "sharing" as the link's author suggests, in the very same light. My Mexican buddies don't care how many tacos I eat, unless I'm stealing them from their plates! But that's a different kind of appropriation anyway. I don't become a Mexican by eating tacos any more than they become gringos (or Anglos depending on their level of PC) by having a cheeseburger. Sheesh...

I don't get it. using peoples inventions or customs in america should be a respect to the culture or the land from which it came.
and being America is a melting pot of culture, how can one expect to live a life in America not using different cultural inventions or customs?

a template to show how some "less-enlightened" warriors just aren't measuring up!

Most martial arts come from Asia, the idol of martial artists is Bruce Lee.
A year ago or so a girl wore a qipao/cheongsam to her prom. That led to a lot of muttering and grumbling among the "Chinese" communities in this country.
In Taiwan they all cheered for her.
If Western people adopt Buddhist ideas, is that "cultural appropriation" ?
If Asians embrace Christianity is that " cultural appropriation" ?
