Over on another forum, someone posed the question, what was the name of the feature of the hump at the top of the backstrap on the grip of double action revolvers. I was a mite surprised that no one actually came up with the term. This dates back to the S&W top break revolvers for the Russians around 1872.

The Russian specifications stated they wanted the revolver like the No.3 S&W, except to have a "prawl" at the top of the grip to control the revolver in recoil.

Surely Smith & Wesson collectors are familiar with that term?

I thought a prank was a little part of the trigger inside the gun.
The pawl is a part of the trigger mechanism. The prawl is the bump on the top of the grip that keeps the gun from rolling back. Notice I put one on my avatar with photoshop. I have a cross between a Bisley and a Redhawk grip.
