I had not seen the video (thanks for posting that!), but the book is fascinating. I had a copy as a teen, but have long since lost track of it. A great read if you can find a copy!

Marine pilots are tough but he didn't expect that when he woke up that morning.
Single engine fighters with a failure are in bad shape, especially at 47k feet.

Bill Weaver survived a freefall from a Mach3 @ 78,800 feet flight in a SR-71 Blackbird..
But his RSO didn't.
