The little things

Coach, I agree with you that bats are pleasing to watch fly. Once we accidentally left our back screen door open one summer night and a bat flew into the house. Our two cats went "bat" crazy leaping from the floor to a chair to near the ceiling with claws flashing. Of course the bat easily evaded them. The wife wasn't all that calm either. I opened a window and out went the bat. Unlike birds, bats can "see" window glass.

I think bats are ultra cool! I used to watch them every summer night, then they disappeared :? Last summer I saw them again. I havn't noticed any this year.

I deal with bats quite often. They have been responsible for me buying several Rugers. They are very beneficial to us as a single bat can eat about 1000 mosquitoes a night. But, in our homes,,, not so much. Rabies, zoonotic diseases, & even bat bugs are the 3 main problems.
But outside, quite fun to watch & appreciate!

Trip to the way back machine . . . . but still about bats.

The Summer before I finished high school my step-grand mother was
visiting (we were seventeen miles to town) and about mid day (WHAT?)
she started screaming about "de flutermouse, de flutermouse!" (She
was old school Norwegian :D ). Turns out that a bat had gotten in to
the house (my bet is it was on the underside of the porch roof and got
disturbed).

My step dad opened the front door, kept it moving, and in a very short
time it went out the doorway. Problem solved, except for Maggie (step
grand mother). It took her an hour to calm down. :D

She never did swing the back door open very quickly after that. 8)

Strange that you should bring that up. I was telling the wife just the other day that I missed watching the bats in the evening and listening to the whip-poor-wills. For some reason there does seem to be any of either around my area.

They drive me batty ! They can be seen on the local afb radar at night down here...or so I've heard.

I was enjoying a camp fire and some Budweisers with a couple of friends one summer night. Bats were doing their thing in the evening air.

One of my friends says " Those birds sure do fly funny".

We had to explain that they were bats eating mosquitoes.

About an hour later the biggest owl I have ever seen flew out of a tree from behind us. Only about 2 feet over our heads. I swear it had a six foot wing span, it was huge.

My friend who asked earlier about the "birds", was the first to break the silence. "Holy crap, that was the biggest bat I have ever seen"

White-nose syndrome is hitting the PA populations pretty bad. Some populations suffering 85%-90% mortality rate.

I'm sure PA isn't the only state suffering this disease.
