Fantastic pictures. Does everybody ride motor-scooters? Side-saddle??
This picture really intrigued me. How does it steer?  :?

Jimbo,
Depends on what Far East country you are in. Also notice that the women are wearing skirts. Hard for them to ride any other way without giving a good view. That is why the Vespa style scooter is popular with the women that wear skirts. It also is better riding in the rain and crap that comes off the road, plus a spare tire.
About the Countries, I have worked in Jakarta, Singapore, Korea, China and spent time in Bangkok.
Jakarta most of the Women are Muslim and shy about wearing pants so sidesaddle and Vespas. It Singapore they don't care so will Ride straddled and wear pants and shot skirts. Korea and China the same

Thanks for posting some GREAT PICTURES of Bangkok. I was there in 1985 and really enjoyed it. The Palace is just outstanding. Think about the time period it was built Mid 1700s and what we were building at the time.

Thanks,

Jim

OK, I think I see the frame pivot under her foot. The handle bars must cam the front of the bike side to side on that pivot so it actually steers from the back. Strange.

Thanks, guys. Been jet lagged so I haven't been on here since I posted that. I think the cart thing steered at the yoke, just like a motorcycle. Food was excellent. It's a big city, so they have Chinese, Italian, German, etc., kinds of restaurants in addition to Thai food. I had what might have been the best Italian dinner of my life in Bangkok. It you liked the photos, grab a cup of coffee and watch the action at this scooter taxi stand...

Oh, one other thing...they are close to India, so they had a lot of Indian food, too. It was all good. I was amazed at how polite everyone was.

Thanks for the reminder. Spent a year assigned to the Joint U.S. Military Advisory Group (Navy Advisory Group) in Bangkok; 1978-1979. Very hard language to learn (for me,) never did learn how to read it. Thailand has a very interesting history.

One of my friends had a motor bike; that's how we got around after hours from time to time.

Some of the best looking women i have seen (from a distance) were actually men. This was when i was deployed to Thailand in the mid 90s. I had heard about "catoys" before we went but i didnt believe it until i saw it first hand. Very interesting country.

My Dad was in SE Asia during a "little mis-undersanding" back in the late '60's. He flew a "boat load" of Combat Missions in a B-52.

His "best story" IMHO, was the time he went to Bangkok to "find a souvenir".
He ended up at a "gold broker's shop". Big man, flanked on both sides with "Babe" Fan Movers. Dad wanted a "chunk of gold". A deal was made. Dad headed back to the base and continued on........

So, is that alluding to the all the red neon in the OP's photos? I understand that the architecture, and cuisine isn't the big tourist draw to Thailand.

I don't believe it is alluding to all the red neon. That's a whole other Bangkok adventure. My experience with jewelers and in tailor shops was usually very good and strictly business oriented. I never experienced the "babe fan movers;" expect that was for the dealer. Thailand, Hong Kong, and Saigon, was always offered a cold soft drink or two. Courtesy, and in one season it was hot, wet, and muggy. The other season hot and dry. The cold soft drink served a purpose. I had quite a bit of jewelry made for my wife when I was out there. The gemologist here in the states was pretty interested in several of the pieces. Valued at more than four times what I paid.

Didn't have a lot of money to spend on gold in bulk, however all of the jewelry was stones set in gold. My own ring is 20 grams of 18 karat gold. I have no idea what the total gold weight of the jewelry I brought home for my wife is.

One night in Bangkok, will make a hard man humble.

And a "slightly" drunk GI broke. Not that I would know anything about that.

I was there long about thirty (edit, I wrote thirty?, it's been over forty, gawd I'm getting old) years ago. Somethings change, but others stay the same. The girl in the bar in one shot looked so familiar. Wonder if I knew her grandmother?

I started to have flash backs when watching the scene from Bangkok. I was up north in Udorn, Thailand from 68 to 69 and again from 71 to 73. I wish I could turn back to clock to those good old days.
