My dad used to d leather alot, i wish I had all of the stamping tools he had. But it is really funny I was just looking at thier site just the other night. I went on there to look for a belt because I am tired of all the offerings at local stores that are made with crappy leather that stretches after a few months of use. While I was there I started looking at their holsters and a few other things. I may get back into doing leather. i am lucky though, we still have a Tandy store in the Richmond area although it is about a 90 minute drive from here.

There has been a store in Baltimore for the past 25 years. I don't think they ever closed.

There is one in Raleigh, NC, about an Hour from where I live. I'll be heading there soon.

Pretty cool book, even though it's VERY old-school and was even then. Lots of full-size patterns, and all kinds of how-to tips and instructions. Fun read, fun book. :wink:

When I was into Leather, I didn't own a Handgun at that time. A few things have changed since then. I have about $1200 ( 1988 Dollars ) invested in Tools that's going to get a workout :lol: .................................................

I remember when there was a Tandy was everywhere. By the time I moved from NY, they all closed down up there.............................

I also remember when Tandy and Radio Shack were in the same store...........................

The book Snake45 referenced has a lot of good information in it, and is worth having. The patterns aren't necessarily for current models, or for the en vogue holsters, but it will show you how to make patterns and so on.

Get on their mailing list, some of their specials are very good. This weeks E-flier has a new custom holster pattern link for $4.00. It says 45 pages if you do the download purchase.

The tools from the '80's and earlier are very good to have, quality wise.

My understanding of the company, was the changing computer market had a lot to do with the slide the leather stores. The restructuring of the chain resulted.

Back a ways Tandy had a couple of great holster kits. They included a piece of leather large enough for the kit, a sheet of patterns, thread and a snap. There was a pancake holster kit and a sportsmans holster kit.
I bought a number of those kits and loved using them to make holsters for my revolvers.
They recently sent me an email with this information:

Now I just get myself some leather and trace my gun and make my own; but those kits were a great start

I used to absolutely LOVE to make holsters, I liked to carve them also, which caused a lot of consternation when held up next to the professional makers. None the less it is extremely satisfying to craft a holster from your own pattern and carve or stamp it and wear it for the gun intended, I have not been able to do this for 12 yrs or so do to time constraints, I aim to solve this problem ASAP. They're are some leather working forums that can be usefull and are full of info.

I ordered a couple of small things from them last night along with the semi-auto mdium holster kit. I also downloaded one of their pattern books from their E-book site. The email I recieved said that it will ship from my local store, In Richmond Va, about 100 miles away.

I now think I might like to get a Black Hawk besides an SP101, then I have a reason to tool up a western holster.

Wow Tandy has come a long way with hoster kits since the last time I did leather work back in the 70's
I grew up in Salt lake city as a kid, funny I looked up locations on there site and they still have to old So. state street store I use to go to in my teens.
Maybe I should get back into it I still have all the stamps and tools, I was real good at all the fancy western carving.

Leatherworker.net forums are the best resource I've found online. A great group over there. All the relevant information is in the different forums, carving and stamping, sewing, holsters, ect. There are some top shelf artisans on there.

Over the last several years, Tandy has been revamping the tools and supplies they carry. Now they pretty much only carry their own product line... They have been improving their tools, and introducing new ones.

Springfield Leather has a pretty broad selection of product lines, along with Hidecrafters. Hidecrafters doesn't have the best website the last I looked, but a very broad product line.

IIRC Hidecrafters was started by George Hurst, after Tandy took a nose dive during the '90's. They've restructured over the last several years, gone from two stores, down to one, and I think George is back with Tandy. He's been in their newest O/L video demonstration streaming videos.

How would a holster look made out of either Aligator or Ostrich Skin, the real stuff and not the simulated cow hide?

Bought a shoulder and made several holsters out of it,kept this one. That was back in the early '90's with a local store. You can get a catalog and order stuff on line,but when buying the leather I like to be there to pic it out.
