Approximately where, in the production of the SSS, did Ruger start using the unfluted cylinder for the .22 WMR cartridge ? Prior to the discontinued Old Model or the NM ?

All of the Old Model Super Single-Sixes had fluted cylinders. The non-fluted cylinders started for the New Models in 1975 for the Blue guns and in 1976 for the Stainless Steel guns.

Mostly yes but there are a few transition guns with one old and one new type cylinders that do exist. Parts bin theory???or Bill Ruger not wasting anything??? :lol: . Who knows.

Probably both! I have convertibles w/smooth mag cylinders shipped earlier than another with a fluted cyl. The hard and fast rule is, there are no hard and fast rules.

The blue guns switched to the new type cylinders around 64-15000 to 64-17xxx or so before the Liberty marking and the stainless guns swtiched about 64-70000.
But as mentioned, Ruger's workers did not worry about making sure one gun had all old cylinders or another with all new cylinders. They put in them whatever was available at the workbench.
