Just bought a 7 1/2" super blackhawk and I'm getting "fair" primer strikes. The strikes are not quite as good as my other single actions.May be a weak mainspring or something else?Anyway, will it hurt to install a slightly heavier mainspring without damage to the firing pin?Have not shot any speer ammo through it so may try that.I guess if it shoots the speer with no problems it's probably alright but just thought I'd put a heavier spring for assurance. My other five supers put a very good indent(sp?) on the primer as well as my blackhawks. The ammo was federal american eagle. Also,I'm I correct in thinking that the factory mainspring is 24lbs? Now that I think about it,previous owner could have replaced the factory with a lighter spring.

IIRC, Factory springs are at 23 lbs. The Old Army used a 25 lb. version, which has made its' way into a few of my "large bore" shooters. Back in the early days of the "Ruger Only" loads being published, writer Ross Seyfried was discussing springs and was touting the advantages of the heavier designs.

Friction reduction among the lockwork's components goes a long way to make a heavy spring feel "just right". :D

JMHO,

Wolff says the factory spring was 23 lbs and has replacements in both extra and reduced powers.

Or one could say that a slick action negates the need for heavy springs. ;)

A heavier spring will not hurt your firing pin. More sure ignition from a good firm hammer strike often improves accuracy as well, with more consistent ignition........

+1 to reducing friction. I bet you take any new Ruger revolver and feel the mainspring strut with your fingers, and it will feel rough. Polish it well and the improvement will be easy to tell. It's a 10 minute job worth every second.

I do that as a matter of routine.

I appreciate the information from all.Need to break it down anyway and clean/oil that hole in the side of the hammer where that spring and plunger go so I'll do some smoothing up while I'm at it.Louiethelump, this is not the bisley I bought from you that had a different trigger spring installed.Shame to say but I haven't even fired that revolver yet

????????????????????????????????

I thought you were talking main spring. You said mainspring and you said Super Blackhawk, so I am not sure what you are talking about here.......

Not aware of a "different trigger spring installed"

But, whatever.............

also should check your firing pin 'protrusion' and remember to make sure the chambers are clean also..if dirty they can hang up the case and "dampen" the firing pin impact ( cause light hits & misfires...)

I am talking mainspring. The one from you had a trigger spring replaced and just didn't want you to think I was talking about the bisley having light primer hits.I will polish up the inards of this stainless and if that still leaves me with light strikes,I'll replace the mainspring with another factory or go heavier. The bisley I purchased from you had a Wolf hammer spring installed with the original left in the box.We had discussed this prior to me buying and all was/is well.Sorry for the confusion.
