This project started about 2 years ago by filing off the warning label on the barrel. The gun was originally blue so I figured that I would send it off to Hamilton Bowen for bluing and casehardening after I had finished the barrel. Well, that never happened and it sat in the safe pretty much a wreck for the past couple of years. Today I thought I would remove the rest of the finish and see if it would look like a stainless .44 Special. After spending most of the day stripping the finish, fine sanding and then polishing it with steel wool, this is the end result. I left the screws and pins blue to see how it looked, I think I like it. The grips are by Patrick Grashorn and the holsters are El Paso Saddlery.

The inspiration came from Hamilton Bowen's book The Custom Revolver. On page 186-187 there is an old model Blackhawk left in-the-white with ivory grips that has nitre-blued screws. I've always thought that that revolver was absolutely stunning. With my limited skills I thought I would try to make my gun resemble something like that. If worse came to worse, and I got in over my head, I would just continue with my original plan and send it to Hamilton Bowen for bluing and casehardening. Overall I like it , however the front sight is too bright so I need to do something with that.

Eezox should do the trick.

I've wondered if there isn't some kind of clear, not too shiny laquer or gun coating you could spray/dip the entire gun in for protection as well. Similar to what Turnbull puts over the top of their case coloring, although maybe not that glossy.
