Substitute WSPM primer for WSP primer??

I am trying to load some 357 magnum 158 grain Oregon Trail SWC cast bullets. I will be using 4.2 grains of Titegroup powder. For that powder my load data says to use from a minimum of 3.8 grains up to a maximum of 4.4 grains so I am well within the powder range recommended.

The load manual also says to use a standard small pistol primer. I have a lot of .357 brass already primed with a Winchester Small Pistol Magnum primer. Would I be safe to substitute the Winchester small pistol magnum primer for this specific load?

You will probably have no problems but you should work up your load just for safety.

Start low and work up. A chronograph to compare velocitys with the load manual would be good.
A couple years ago when small pistol "standard" primers were nowhere to be found ,lots of guys were substituting SP magnums in their place. There were no problems that I am aware of.

Check the Hodgdon website for their load data. They have .357 loads with the SPM primers.

IN THE BALLISTICS LAB I had the WSPM primer raise pressurers in 357MAG test cartridges 20% and velocities 125 FPS over the EXACT same loads using WSP primers.

Upon further research, the reloading data center at the Hodgdon Powder Co. website specifically calls for a WSPMagnum primer for this very bullet when using Titegroup powder. Furthermore, it calls for a Titegroup powder load of between 4.5 grains (starting load) and 5.0 grains (maximum grains) which is more than my other published load data.

Now I think I will increase my load to 4.7 grains Titegroup with the WSPM primer and be just fine!

I think you will find many or most of the pistol/revolver loads in the Hodgdon data base use magnum primers. I think this is to prevent someone from getting a surprise by substituting a magnum primer in a recipe that calls tor a standard primer. It certainly isn't because all the powders or loads need a magnum primer.
