Stevens Fowling Piece

About the only new purchase I have made in the last year is a Stevens 12 gauge, single shot, full choke, 30 inch barrel, 3 inch shell capable. What is often called a "goose gun" for those high flying game birds. I got it for predator control. I mentioned in the past that with a highway on one side of me and houses off in the distance on the other, shooting rifles on my place has to be kept restricted. I have not had a need to use it as the wandering dogs preying on my animals has not been a problem. I keep 3 inch Number 4 Buckshot handy with some 00 just in case.

This is a lively gun piece with 3 inch shells. So, I put a recoil absorbing boot on it.

If I were you I’d treat myself to a nice autoloader. Faster follow up shots and softer recoil. Those single shot shot guns have brutal recoil.

Those old Stevens single shots are tough as nails and do exactly what they’re meant to do. A 30” full choke with 3” buck will reach farther than most folks expect, but yeah, they’ll get your attention on recoil. A recoil boot is a smart move. Simple, effective setup for your situation.

I have a Mossberg 535. Not an autoloader but with a ported barrel. I went with the Stevens as it is light to carry when I have to rush out into the pasture. Fast loading. About one or two shots is all I need. The first one will drive off the feral dog even if I miss.
