Stainless Security Six Target Model in 38 Spl, how rare?

I saw a really nice stainless GA-86T this weekend at the Nation's Gun Show. It appeared to be a target model with a 6" barrel, target stocks, white outline rear sight and red insert front sight. I passed because I have a stainless GA-36 (6" barreled 357 Mag with all black sights) and a KGP-160 (GP100 with a 6" half lug barrel in 357 Mag) both of which are pretty much the same thing. I would have jumped on it if it had a 4" barrel.

But I was wondering how many Stainless Security Six Target models in 38 Special could there be. If I understand correctly, a great majority of Security Sixes of all models were made in 357 Magnum with maybe 20% in 38 Special.

As a side comment: What I did NOT see at this gun show (a really big one, near Dulles Airport in northern Virginia) were GP100s and very few SP101s, but there were plenty of ARs and all sorts of magazines at very inflated prices.

There were an estimated 500 GA-86T made for the California Highway Patrol. Some of these have the CHP rollmark on the side of the frame and some do not. The known sn range for these is 159-27589 to 159-85889.
But you are correct in thinking a Security-Six (Adj. sights and square butt) is a highly unusual item in .38 Special. The CHP GA-86T just happens to be the more common of those models that were made.

Well! Maybe I should have jumped on it after all. I'll drop a line to the dealer and see if he still has it. If so, then I'll not let it get away. Chad and Terry, thanks for the information on this variation. I do not recall seeing any extra roll marks on the frame but the serial number prefix was 159. I send a complete S/N if and when I get the gun.

The RUGER 6" SECURITY SIX 38SPL is one of the great 38SPL, sixguns of all time. It is hardly excelled by any other 38SPL that comes to mind and by'n'large I have shot 'em all in the past fifty plus years.
