Only takes a bit of fitting. I used sandpaper, took only a touch off at a time, and it took me less than an hour including disassembly, reassembly, and cleanup.
It gets easier to release with time anyway. The more you use it the easier it gets. I wonder what will happen it you modify it, and as the gun breaks in more, the slide stop quits working altogether.
I figure that the $10-$15 it will cost to order two more slide stop levers if I ever start to have failures is well worth the lack of aggravation that I have now.
I used some fine 800 grit sandpaper to polish the slide stop and the notch in the slide. It is now possible to release the slide with one finger albeit still somewhat difficult. I agree that the more it is used it should break-in some on its own.
You should be aware that doing the above modifications that eventually the slide will no longer lock properly. I had a discussion directly with a service tech at Ruger and that is what he told me. This lock release is similiar to the one used on a 22-45. Using the buttton to release the slide will result in parts needing to be replaced.

Are you trying to release the slide while chambering a round? It's alot easier when your chambering a round rather then just trying to drop the slide with an empty mag.
I hardly ever touch mine. It is a slide LOCK not a slide RELEASE. With a full mag or no mag it will release on its own when you pull the slide back to slingshot it. An empty mag will lock it open when the slide is pulled back.
As a side note, I was at a basic pistol class today (NRA) and the instructor said to never just push it to release the slide on any semi auto. Always pull back the slide first, then slingshot it.
Ive got 1150 rounds through mine and I cant use(nor do I really care that I cant) it as a slide release instead of just a slide stop..but I dont are I just pull it back and sling shot it.. I dont think I could close mine with the slide STOP if I used both fingers to push down as hard as I could..but then thats not what it was designed for anyways..so I dont worry about it.
