I'm in the market for a good and reliable compact 9mm for the GF. She doesn't like the way my Glock 19 feels. I have searched this forum and the S&W forum about both 9mm so, it is narrowed down between the Sr9c or M&P9c. She like the feel of the Sr9c better and so do I. The question is how dependable is the Sr9c. After reading both forums there seems to be more problems and complaints with the Sr9c than the M&P9c. I do realise that everyones gun is the best but, please honest opinions on the Sr9c. Thanks

I have an SR9C with well over 1000 rounds down the pipe and its been flawless. I sold a S&W 659 to finance the 9c and have never looked back. I know it's comparing apples to oranges and I never had a failure with the Smith but it was all stainless and all it was to me was a great looking club as I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with it. I know the accuracy problem was me and not the gun but after purchasing a P95 and seeing how much better I could shoot it I wanted the SR9C and have never been sorry.
I've had my SR9c for two years and put over 500 rounds thru it. The only issue I had with it is that I didn't realize the striker channel had so much gunk from the factory in it, it started misfiring. Once I disassembled it, cleaned out the crap and give it a shot of CLP, it has performed flawlessly. I am also satisfied with its accuracy. It's a keeper.

I've never held or shot an M&P9c but I do own an SR9c. I love this gun. I'm accurate with it and it's real easy to conceal carry with the 10 round magazine. Has she been able to rent either one at a range? This would be another good test.

Got about 700 rounds through mine, it's the stainless, haven't had a problem so far. Never compared the two but happy with the SR9c.
I also love my SR9c. I have had it about 14 months and I have shot about 1200 rounds though it with only a few problems. The problems I had was ammo related and that was cured by checking all the reloads in a chamber checker. Also, make sure you clean out the striker channel and it should run like a top.

I've had my SR9c over 2 years now and am approaching 6000 rds through it. Throughly clean it upon purchase, including the striker and striker tunnel, and you should be just fine regarding reliability. I've shot WWB, Rem green box, various "self defense" loads, and my handloads (jacketed and cast). It handles round nose, HP, and SWC fine. I shoot 93 gr HP to 140 gr SWC and all function fine.
It will be a little stiff at first (recoil spring and magazine springs), not unlike many pistols. Accuracy will lkely improve slighty over the first 250-500 rds. The extractor may shave some brass during this perio as it breaks in. Clean the striker and tunnel every 100 rds or so to prevent light primer strikes.
Cheap insurance: order spare striker assembly and striker cover. If you should be one of the few that has a plastic part there break or crack, Ruger will send replacements, but this way you avoid downtime.

You won't be disappointed. Ignorance is bliss as they say. The SR9c was my first striker type pistol and I had no idea that it required any cleaning other that what is in the book until reading posts on this forum. There was some brass in the tunnel after the first thousand rounds or so but nothing that would cause a failure to fire. Out of the box, the feed ramp showed some very fine tool marks and I gave it a little polish just to be on the safe side. Learn to keep it clean and it will always go bang.mikee57 said:

Sounds like you already made the right decision, maybe I can be reinforcing- I have one, too, and I love it. I also have a S&W but I carry my SR9c every day.

For your GF, make sure she can rack the slide. That is the tough one for my wife and daughter. The SR9c is stiff for weaker hands. Other than that I have seen no failers due to weak wristed shooting from mine but it has seen a couple thousand rounds also. The grip is much better on the SR series for the girls hands in my family. They enjoy the shooting just loading it stinks for them.

the ruger is skinnier, but about the same size as the M&P. it was purchased for that reason, as she has small hands, and didnt like the feel of the M&P.
honestly, i feel the fit and finish of the M&P to be slightly higher. they are both brand new, and im sure they will both be excellent guns when they are broke in, but right out of the box, IMO the M&P feels of higher quality. The tolerances are tighter as well on the M&P. I dont care for having to push out the pin to field strip the ruger.
They both shoot great, and are easy to point and handle. I can put a full mag through 1 ragged hole at 7 yrds with both guns.
The ruger has a manual safety, where the M&P doesnt. The ruger is also a little cheaper.
IMHO the M&P is the better piece, but also runs about $100 more. The ruger is a nice gun though, and well worth a look.

+1 I got SR9c and M&P 40c. If I would have to go with only one M&P is my choice, but SR9c is such a sweet shooter, very accurate, and so much cheaper. Plus it works with smaller hands better than M&P. I am shooting both of them side by side, and neither one had a single failure. I have about 350 rounds through both.
