sr9 mag release

good day all:
i purchased a sr9 new about 4 wks ago,and have put approximately 600 rnds through it.
i was wondering if the mag release is a 2 handed operation.
i cant seem to be able to release the slide unless i pull back on the slide while pushing the slide release button down.
should i be able to release the slide with one thumb or is it designed to require both hands.
i am new to pistol shooting and this is my first.
i tried a freinds cz85b combat and really liked the way i could release the slide with one hand.

The slide on the SR9c is unlike most semi autos. With some wear in you will be able to operate the "slide lock" as a "slide release", but officially per the instruction manual it is a "slide lock" and you should sling shot the slide to chamber your first round. I have an SR9c with about 500 rounds through it, and I can still not operate the "lock" as a "release". Not a big deal to me, but those that have shot semi-auto handguns for a while seem to not like it.

If chambering a round you do not need to hold the slide lock button, but if your mag is empty you will need to hold the button while releasing the slide.

It should be a 2 handed operation in that you need both hands to work the slide properly. Like GOF said, it's technically a Slide Lock and not like most pistols on the market.

You said you need to push the release down, is this all the time or only with an empty mag? The empty mag will, by design, push up the Slide Stop with the Mag Follower, if it's a full mag or no mag, the Slide Stop should fall on it's own. It's spring loaded to go down automatically.

As a left handed shooter I personally like the slide lock the way it is. Seems that everyone feels the need to put the slide lock/release only where right handed shooters can use it, even on ambidextrous guns. To release with an empty mag I just hit the mag release and let the mag drop down a little bit, then pull back on the slide and the lock will drop down. Once you learn the right combo of full/empty/no mag and what the slide lock does you will rarely every touch the slide lock. I hardly ever do.

Mag Release or Slide release? Sr9 or Sr9c. My SR9 is a one handed thumb release for the slide and the mag will drop from either side :? My sons SR9c will not release the slide with just a thumb. You have to sling shot it..

Mine was (& is ) a bit stiff but very useable with the thumb after about 200 rds 8)

Compare the SR9 slide release to the 1911. The SR9 is tiny and it is no surprise it takes force to operate it. If it is too difficult, you can always slingshot the slide.

I actually found that I prefer the slingshot method for loading a round into the chamber. I'm right handed, and have shot a bunch of other semi-autos before, and while I appreciate the way the slide lock acts as a release on most handguns, the slingshot method allows me to keep a better grip on the pistol while the slide rams forward. Just my .02.

I adapted to my SR9 in that when I dump a spent magazine and insert a fresh one, I bring my support hand up and over the slide and grip it with my palm and the fingers. Once I have the grip, I pull the slide back a bit and let it "slingshot" forward under it's own spring force. I do not use the slide lock at all, unless I'm trying to release the slide with an empty magazine in the weapon, in which case I pull the slide back, depress the lock and let the slide go.

I've timed this with the SR9 against my Beretta 92, which has a very nice slide release. I'm only hundredths of a second slower with the SR9.

Good day all:thank you very much for all your replies.
my wife really likes this gun and shoots it very well(better than me lol)but she has trouble with the slide release as she's barly strong enough to cock the gun and she has small hands.
she had no interest in guns untill i got this ruger.as i type this,shes taking her firearms course so she can compete in idpa.and shes in her mid fifties!
go figure!!
