SR556 muzzle device removal

I just bought a used SR556 off the Classifieds here. In true AR-15 fashion, I'm swapping out parts all over the place. And I have never, never cared for the look of the Ruger FS. Not on a Mini-14. Not the new Tactical Mini-30. And for sure not on an AR-15.

So I want to remove the old one and screw on something different. It is the 16" barrel so the FS shouldn't be silver soldered on there or anything crazy. I was going to take a couple of pieces of wood and cut out a rough trough for the barrel. Little smaller than barrel diameter. Then put those two pieces of wood in a vice and use it to clamp the barrel right behind the FS. Then find some method to grab the FS and torque it off. I'm _assuming_ that they are reverse threads and standard AR pattern under there. So once I get the old one off, I should be able to put any AR type of FS on the barrel? I haven't decided yet if I want to just go standard A2 or maybe it is time to try out one of those expensive Battle Comps!

Interesting. I watched a video on youtube and the darn AR's have regular threads. My AK's all have reverse threads. It's a good thing I checked or I would have killed myself trying to get that FS off the rifle!

A Torx 60 works pretty nice to grab the FS.

I like the AAC Brakeout myself. Its a muzzle brake, flash suppressor, and 51T for use with sound suppressors.

I'm trying to figure out what you mean. I've used a bunch of Torx stuff over the years but mainly in computers or auto interiors. Are you saying a Torx 60 is so big you can shove it in the muzzle end of the FS and then unscrew it? I know I don't have anything that big!

I haven't done it, but I've read the same thing in different forums. It takes a Torx 60. I know one person found it at a Napa Auto parts store. Big truck type tool.

Yea Gregg, they make some pretty big Torx screws!

T60 is pretty close to 1/2".

OK, I'll look around for a T60. If I don't stumble on one right away, I'll probably just use channel locks. It isn't like I'm planning to ever put that FS on anything else. If it came off perfectly, it would probably go in my parts box and never see the light of day again.

Was going to use it on a Robinson M96 but used the AAC instead - the CavArms is more dull blued than matte. If you want to swap your Ruger cage for this shoot me a PM.

Do you care about keeping the old Flash hider? If not, then just jam a screwdriver thru the ports and torque it off. Alternately, you could use vice-grips to clamp onto it and twist it off.

Doing it this way will probably wreck the original flash hider, but if that doesn't matter to you...
