I've recently got a SR556 and I love it. I don't love the rinky-dink manual though that came with it. What is seriously missing (unless there is a separate manual which I did not receive) is what parts to lube and where. First question is is there a manual that covers that topic? And second, if no manual can someone tell me in some detail what parts and where the SR556 should be lubed. Or maybe a web site that has this information? (Perhaps I lube the part and places that the AR15/M4 is lubed? How about the piston group? Thank you.

You want to clean the gas system, but then leave it dry. If you leave it wet with lube, it will just cause the carbon to be burned onto the surface and make it harder to remove. For the rest, pretty much like a normal AR.

Ruger has several videos on the SR556 which may be of interest. Here is a link. http://www.ruger.com/resources/videos.html/

Thank you. When I went to that page it apparently no longer exists. I've tumbled across the Ruger vids before, maybe on Youtube, and though they were ok I really am looking for a detailed manual. I came across a site, BHI, that had what looked like a decent, though pricey, M16/M4 manual <http://www.bhigear.com/m16-m4-handbook-pannone-lawrence.aspx> but the shipping was horrendously expensive. Something like 13 bucks for an 80-something page over priced-to-begin-with book. Best just to clean the piston assembly - many vids on that and the Ruger manual handles that as well as I recall - and then clean/lube pretty much like a standard DI AR rifle.

From the manual:
3. Using powder solvent on a clean patch or bore brush, remove powder residue from
all components of the mechanism. After cleaning, run a dry patch through the
bore, then follow with a patch that is very lightly oiled. Wipe all surfaces clean with
a cloth, then wipe all surfaces with a patch or cloth that has been very lightly oiled.
4. NOTE: Only a light application of oil is needed to provide adequate lubrication of
moving parts and to prevent rust. Excess accumulations of oil tend to attract
particles of dust and dirt and many congeal in cold weather which can interfere
with the safe and reliable function of the rifle.
