I am having trouble with my new SR 762 Blowing lake city Xm80c primers. We are talking a home in the primer after firing. Not so much flattening but a hole in the primer. Not every round but at least one per 20. Twice rifle has had plug of primer stuck in bolt. Can't fire again until tap firing pin to push out metal plug. I have only fired factory ammo in this rifle. Using others types of ammo have noticed some cratering. That slight ridge all the way around the firing pin mark. If it was handloaded, would say they are too hot, but this all factory ammo. Gunsmith checked headspace, it was fine. Should I send rifle back to Ruger?

Hi,

Of course you should! You paid for a rifle that works, and Ruger hasn't done their job until you get one. At no additional cost to you. It's a simple concept.

May be a problem with the profile on the end of the firing pin, that can happen with AR type firearms. Brownells sells a firing pin protrusion gauge, but it is for AR-15's and not certain if it would work on an AR-10 type.

Once you get a pierced primer the gas can erode the firing pin, check yous with a 10X magnifier.

Another cause can be improper headspace on the chamber, it can be cut too deep, and this combination can result in pierced primers too.

You could buy and extra firing pin and give it a try or ask Ruger to send you a couple to try before you send the gun back.
