I just found out about the new SR-556E. I've been interested in the SR-556 but the price has kept me away.

Then I see it sells for $620 less. On top of that, I like it better. Slimmer and lighter than all but one of the original models.

MSRP $1375. :D

Now I'm interested.

Does any body have any real world prices, gun shows, etc. Preferably in Texas?

LGS has one for $1k so a gun show should be a little cheaper.

and Yes it is a nice set-up rifle, I prefer this new handguard.

I just saw and handled one in the base BX the other day (priced at $1058.00, no sales tax). I really like the feel of the handguard and the full length top rail appeals to me. I haven't owned an AR in a few years and just recently started thinking about buying another for duty use.

How much of an issue is the lack of a chrome lined chamber and bore?

They are on sale this month at GOG. Through my local FFL (DFW, Texas area) this month they come out to $1103 out the door.

Really, really tempting but I am still trying to really understand what I am losing for the lower cost. I get that I lose the sites and the hand guard but surely there has to be more not on the 556E to warrant the huge price difference versus the regular 556.

Thanks for the replies.

I'll try to make the Silver Spur Show in San Angelo, Jan 14-15.

I'll let you know what they're going for if I see any.

They'll be in Abilene, Feb 25-26.

Well, it's mostly about cutting costs, and a lot of AR companies don't chrome line their bores for the same reason, they just don't tell you. But there is an advantage of a non-chromed bore vs chrome, accuracy tends to be a little better without the slippery chrome effects.

Since .223/5.56 is not corrosive like the ComBloc cartridges, chrome lining isn't necessary. Most people don't use their AR15s in combat either, so lengthy periods between cleaning aren't a factor.
