Hey guys just wanted to ask a silly question. I just got my 556 today and the piston housing and barrel are almost a od green. I've shot a friends and looked at them at stores and they are black. I oiled it to see if its shipping grease but its just green. Is this normal? Thanks!

They may have a finish that varies a little in color. For example, parkerizing can range a little and can be made in several colors. This is not necessarily parkerizing, but that would be an easy example. Mine is black.

Thanks Geo, Its being picked up tomorrow heading back to Ruger. I just hope they don't tell me I am crazy. A friend looked at it that has one and said it would bug him. Thanks again.

Maybe it had the super rare proprietary super secret "if I told you what it was, I'd have to kill you" military oxide finish on it??
Did you shoot it first to see how it performed?

I'll bet he wasn't able fire it as the electronic fire control system is coded.

Ok I sent it back to ruger and they told me its a new and better finish and I would basically have to live with it. So it will be back Monday can't wait. Ordered two od green magpul mags. :) all is good!

My "e" model is kinda heading in the green direction too. Does not bother me and it shoots great. Can't really see it in the photo..

Mine is also pretty black, well except the XTM rail covers. I will admit the barrel and piston valve housing are more of a dark grey, but that's cool.
