here is the OM black eagle on the left, then the transition "squashed chicken".......
the "squashed chicken" can be found in various configurations, sizes, some "flatter, wider ( broader) than others, the "normal" slim, trim silver eagle medallion....note the blued hardware ( escutcheons ) and those 'transition grips had blued grip screws also, after 1973, the silver eagle medallions, and the grips they came on had "aluminum" escutcheon, and stainless steel screws ( all in the white (bare), or silver color) Shortly after that some of the silver eagles had a rough, tarnished look, bad plating of the plastic parts, much like those found on model car kits.............most likely different vendors, part suppliers of the medallions put into those grip panels by whomever, the grip maker or the factory???
the term "squashed chicken" was coined by Mr Bob Campbell quite a few years ago at a Ruger theme show back in the late 70's or early 80's..............and even used as such in his early displays of 357 magnum Blackhawks. I think he even used the term "pickayune" (sic)  8)
Steve, you are more than welcome, all one as to do is "ask", never know who may pop in , make a comment or two, some even "makes sense"...ALL part of "ruger lore"...after all these years some of these guns have some REAL stories to tell. Remember, NOTHING is "cut in stone", there can and will be exceptions to everything.............
