Speedsix question

Walked in local gun shop Saturday to sell some guns on consignment, and
there it was, stainless speedsix just looking at me and grinning. A little
trading and I walked out with it and some cash. Now the question. This
gun has a 2 7/8 inch barrel, and the blue speedsix I already owned has
a 2 5/8 inch barrel. My measurements may be a little off, but there is a
quarter inch difference in barrel length between the two. Any insight into
this?

The one I owned was a 2 3/4". Never measured it though. It said 2.75" on the box.

Wish I had the gun back though.

Three inch Speed Sixes were produced. I never measured the one that I had but it wouldn't surprise me if the actual length ran 2 7/8".

The 3 inch barreled Speed Sixes were produced toward the end of production, I believe. I have two stainless Speed Sixes; one of which was made in 1981 with a 157 serial prefix, fully domed recoil shield and 2 3/4 inch barrel, the other was made in 1987 with a 162 serial prefix, a scalloped recoil shield and a 3 inch barrel. I would love to find a few more.

Well, now I do appreciate all the info. I have figured out
my cheap plastic student ruler is 1/8 inch off. So I have a
blue 2 3/4 speedsix made in 1985, and a 3 inch stainless
made in 1987 according to the serial number history. Tried
the new (to me) stainless today and it is a shooter and
perfect windage wise, will not need to file on the back sight
notch. Shoots about 1 inch high at 20 yds. with .38 reloads
(158 gr cast SWC) and just about the same in .357 mag with
some JHP. I am however, not computer savvy and still lack
picture posting skills. When one of my children come to visit
I'll try to get educated. Powderblast

Powderblast.... it's good to hear your SpeedSix is dead nuts @ 20 yards. My late friend's 2-3/4" stainless shot likewise. POA/POI ZERO, or point of aim/point-of-impact coincidence is a big deal. The fixed-sight SpeedSix toughies I've shot share this quality. POA/POI ZERO is, or was, s.o.p. for J-frame S&W's.

A good 5-shot J-frame Smith or SpeedSix Ruger should be able to collect torso hits @ 100 yards, not because that is a "likely scenario," but because intrinsic accuracy offers the one possibility of carrying the snubnose revolver from in-your-gut defense to the fringe of tactical use.

The plastic frame revolvers I have shot are pathetic in deployable accuracy. This fact may simultaneously anger and be meaningless to owners. I have shot small revolvers with laser sights which damn well needed that stream of red light, as the iron sights would do just as well to direct a slug at a bystander as a bandit.

The Ruger SpeedSix represents a benchmark in durable, accurate, manageable belly guns.

Kind've a long, short story.

We know there are a few round-butt Security Sixes floating around, and history says a batch of gripframes were rounded at the factory, after the fact of leaving the factory with a square butt. Ruger has no documentation of which ones received this treatment. A serial number range is known that encompasses these rounded Sixes, and mine is in that serial number range.

So, I will probably never know if mine is a factory alteration, or if somebody else did it. It is a flawless job, and any Speed Six grips fit, perfectly.
