Hi all from a new guy in Alabama!
I've been reading a ton since I bought my new to me Speed Six in .357 with a 2 3/4 barrel.
I purchased the gun from a friend with intentions of carrying it while working and scouting on a hunting lease that my son's and I are members in.
It is showing a large amount of holster wear on the blued finish. I was thinking of getting it re-finished until I researched the serial number.
The Number is 151-109XX. Looking up this number on Ruger's site shows that it was manufactured in 1974.
It has no warning markings on the barrel.
My questions are
Should I get this gun re-finished?
I'm not really a collector, but I guess I can start.
Is a gun like this collectible?
Here are a few pictures

Thanks for any advice!

Jeff,

1st, nice pistol. How does it shoot? May I ask what you gave for it?

#1- No I (personally) would not refinish that gun. You say your gonna carry it, and it doesn't look that bad to me! You will get a wide range of answers.
#2- We all start some where, that's a damn good start!
#3- Collectible, no, desirable, YES
#4- (oops) Don't tell to many people, these guns are HOT right now. (the six series anything).

Here are my 2: And the story that goes with them. I started with S&W Auto's, but I love my Rugers!! You'll love the Security Six story, now that gun needed refinished!!!

I've only put around 30 rounds through it, but it hits what I aim at!
I have nothing to compare it to, but I think it has had trigger work done. It is very smooth.
I paid 250 for it.

Well, it's pretty worn. I'd give you $275 plus shipping.

Sorry, I will have to decline your offer!
Our lease is in a pretty rural area.
Sometimes you run across snakes with no legs and other times you run across snakes of the two legged variety!

I can't get it re-blued without sending it off. I was thinking of Parkerizing it.
What do you guys think of that option?

This is a pic of the last Ruger that I owned. Sadly I had to let her go when I was out of work for back surgery.

Ford's or Tripp Research.
or your local gunsmith may be able to recommend another place....they are getting harder & harder to find.

Welcome to the Forum!
A lot has been covered above.
I'd opt to leave the gun alone, carry it, and enjoy it. The "wear" you see is honest use. Shoot it, clean it, keep a light coat of oil on it, and it'll be fine.
Spend the money on ammo or reloading supplies for more shooting!

I agree 100% withy contender's comments above.
My carry revolver is same as yours but in stainless.
The hard chrome finish will cost you as much as the revolver did & it is more applicable to semi autos because of its lubricity properties.
So buy some ammo & get to know that revolver!

My opinion, only because you asked.

If it was mine, I'd keep it oiled up and be proud of the guns maturity. If you're insistent on rebluing the gun, it's yours to do whatever you want. There's enough of these guns around that the impact on the guns value will be minimal.

And please lose those grips !

Cerakote on a Speed Six? Heart be still !

WAYNO.

The new to me smaller grips are on order. I'm trying the old style small Pachmyr grips.

There is a shop that cerakotes close by.......

By your other picture, (sorry you had to give it up) you know about Rugers.

It hits what you aim at, what else is there? It MAY have had trigger work, but my little experience with Rugers is, generally the triggers are good to go. I just polished all the internals on mine and shimmed them both. Now they are WOW! I can stack the triggers nicely, smooth as butter in DA.

two fitty is a darn good deal.

I lived in Anniston when I got out of the service in 1979, went to work driving for Super Valu. Left in 1984, and moved here. Retirement is going to be in N.E. GA.

I went through basic at good old Ft. McClellan!
August 1991 through December 1991 OSUT on the chemical side.

I Ordered a set of Hogue Goncalo Alves checkered with a cap from amazon for $52.40!!!!

Some folks may not like it, but the little gun has been dropped off to get Cerakoted Socom Blue with a gloss clear.

It should turn out something like this (minus the gold inlay and white grips).

Need to see a picture of those grips, could not find them on amazon. Good luck on the refinish, be sure and post some pics when its done. Is the company local to you?

Some of my family still lives there. They all migrated down from N.Y. My mom is in Jacksonville, next time I run up there, I may look you up, we can have a coffee some morning? Is the Shoney's still in Oxford off of I-20?

Oh, also, you may look into "shimming" that thing. If I hadn't mentioned, (probably did) I just did both of mine. Makes an already good action, better. A lot of guys here use this guy to "tune up" the function of their hammers and triggers.

I think I bought the last pair that Amazon had! They now show none available.
http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B001TE5HIG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Here is a link to them on Hogue's website. (I hope that's what I ordered)

The company is just across the state line in Bremen GA. Evolved Tactical Coatings

The Shoney's is still there! I would be glad to meet you!

I will look into the shims. I'm a little leery of trigger work though.
