For sale locally is a .38 Special stainless Speed Six, 2.75 barrel with box, papers & a nice leather holster for $350. While I'd rather have a .357 model this little gem looks nice, and I reload so I could "sweeten" the loads a little. I was curious though if the .38's are somewhat rare since you don't seem to see many for sale. I'm tempted to get it, but wanted opinions on the current value since you hardly ever see Ruger revolvers of any kind in my neck of the woods. Any thought or opinions are welcome!

Unless it exhibits abuse or mechanical problems, that is an excellent price on a nice revolver. I would snap it up.

I would not consider a .38 special Speed Six as rare, although I have not encountered them as often as the 357 variety.

I prefer the 38 special. The piece can comfortably handle Buffalo Bore +P 38 loads -- all that I need in this type of revolver.

I hate cleaning out the 357 chambers after firing lead 38 reloads -- hence my preference for the 38's.

I'd say it's a good buy. .357 mag. cylinders (a drop in) are available on gunbroker.com. I'd keep the original cylinder, of course, because the .38 spl. is less common and has (or will have) collector value in the future.
It's estimated that only about 20% - 25% were made up in .38, mostly for the LE market. Many of those were destroyed by police depts. rather than resold when depts. transitioned to semi-autos, so it's anybody's guess on how many are in private hands available to collectors.

Agreed. BUY IT! I own a SS 2 3/4 .357 Speed Six. It is one of my favorites. Perfect size and built well. Super easy to detail strip (no side plate) and a great shooter.
They were once cheap. Nowadays folks are realizing how good they really were/are and the prices have been rising rapidly. A LNIB one just sold on Gb for ......$775.

$350 is a no brainer.

I prefer .38 Special over .357 Mag
I am really happy with my Speed Six in .38 Special
Mine has a 4" barrel, which I prefer for toting about in the field
If I were you and was interested in that SS 2 3/4" Speedy... I'd buy it!

I'd say that is a screamin deal. Grab it before you regret it.
I have the 357 Speed Six and a 38 Service Six. They are both strong and reliable. The 38 versions are virtually the same gun. The chambers are drilled shorter and .38 is stamped on the barrel. This was the cheapest way for Ruger to fill their 38 special only orders.

I had a blued 2 & 3/4 in 38 SPL and stupidly let it go. I was a nice shooting pistol 15 yards and in. I have several boxes of .38SPL in my basement for the day when I acquire another except hopefully this one will be stainless. If you have funds I would jump on that deal.

Well, you guys convinced me to go ahead & get it. It came with 2 sets of grips, box, paperwork, and a pretty nice leather holster. It handled pretty well when shooting, but shot a little high with the various loads I tried. Are replacement front sight inserts available for these revolvers, or will I have to resort to "Hold Under"? Wndage looks good but it shoots about 5" high at 10 yards. Regardless, looks like this will make an ideal trail gun!

If its shooting low you might try a lighter weight bullet if possible.
Could make a difference in POI.
