Sooo, When are the Stainless NMFTBH 357's gonna be released?

I'd love a 357 too. I've got the 44 Special and the 45 Colt/ACP Stainless New Model Flattops (520 prefix serial) and would think a 357 would be a no-brainer to produce. With a 4 5/8 inch barrel of course.

Well, there is the 50th Anniversary .357 blued flattop 4 5/8 floating around :) . Would be nice to finally have Ruger catalog the blued version in the 5 1/2" (I'd jump on that) or 6 1/2" barrel and maybe even 4 5/8 for those few that like that barrel length ;) Hah! Having the .44Spec already as a cataloged item, it shouldn't take much to ramp up for the .357 version.

I've been hoping for a stainless .357 flattop, too! It seemed to take a long time to dispose of the blued Anniversary version, and maybe that's a concern to Lipsey's. I keep hoping, though.
I also want a stainless 5 1/2" Bisley flattop .44 Special.

And what would really be cool: Make the .357 flattop a convertible with a 9mm cylinder.

I *love* my 50th Anniv 357 Flattop.

I really should get another one.

Fell in love with that gun after seeing a magazine article then handling the item at 2005 SHOT Show.
Great shooter. Strangely more comfortable to shoot - for me - than the larger fullsize BH in 357.

They should seriously consider doing a pure 9mmPara version.

OK. Hear me out.

Done right with a true .355" barrel of 4.68" or so, PLUS a 1" or so section of tight smoothbore throats in the cylinder, the velocities would be wild. As one example: a factory S&W 2" barrel snubbie will generate velocities equal to a Glock19 with a 4" barrel.

There's two reasons for this: one, the Glock's "4 inch" barrel really isn't, because it includes the chamber. But number two: that section of smoothbore in the cylinder means that the first inch of bullet travel has no blow-by whatsoever. By the time the slug hits rifling it's already going like a bat out of hell.

A 4.68" tube on top of that effect would deliver more energy than a 6" barrel autoloader. And some very good, very hot projectiles in 9mm are out there now - including +P+ stuff that really doesn't give up much over a lot of 357Mag loads. And a mid-frame SA in 9mm could eat an unlimited diet of that kind of fodder designed mostly for police use with projectile designs more advanced than what we're seeing in revolver rounds - like the Federal HST 147gr +P "police sales only" load or Winchester's Ranger-T 127+P+ "police only", or the +P+ stuff based on Gold Dot slugs sold by Buffalo Bore and Underwood Ammo to anybody :).

It would work best if it was a true no-compromise 9mm...proper cylinder, throats and barrel. It would be cheap to feed, fun to shoot and would otherwise kick a bunch of butt.

Hmmm....VERY Interesting Jim... but I can't shoot any of the piles of 357mag and 38spcl I have laying around if they went that way. (maybe they'll do both)

BTT so Jason at Lipsey's can see this again. If you want one too, maybe we can make this a petition thread.

Post here if you want one too.

Well...looks like there's only 4 of us, so the demand won't interest Lipsey's. Oh well...gonna hafta order a barrel for my Contender carbine then. At least the ammo pile will last longer.

Put me down for a couple of the stainless flat top .357/9mm convertibles. A 4-5/8" and 5-1/2 would work great for me.

Yeah, I would have thought, Ruger would have dropped the .357 large frame BH by now and just be producing the .357 on the correct medium frame given that the medium frame is back in the line-up (.44Spec and of course the .45 Colt flattops) . 'Seems' like a no-brainer to me! Even put the protective ears back on around the sights.... Not that I am a big fan of the peanut .357 but .... seems so logical :) . Of course 'blued' would be the preferred finish ;) .

Make mine with the 10" barrel option of the original FT...

9mm dedicated FT? Yawn...

(The .357 mag leaves the 9mm in the dust in every way...)

Skeeter had it right regarding the timeless .357 mag 8)

My two centavos...

Hey Jason,

I know they weren't debuted at SHOT, but rumor was everything for 2015 wasn't announced either.

Is a 357 Stainless Flattop in the works?

Thanks,

Stump

I've been looking at that Stainless .357/9mm Blackhawk Convertible for a while now, but I'd go for a Stainless 4 5/8', .357/9mm, Flat top in a heartbeat. I really like my Stainless Flat top in .45 Colt/ACP. :D

Don't foget the 38/40-10mm :D [...]

SAMMI maximum .38-40/.44-40 rim diameter is too large for the mid-frame. This has been covered here in the past with detail dimension drawings. Mid-frame conversions function because most case rims are enough below maximum diameter to work but Ruger builds guns that will accept SAMMI spec. cartridges.

However, I’d buy a 10 mm mid-frame. My choice for a second cylinder would be .40 S&W just because that ammunition is so common.

As previously posted, since the mid-frame is back in production, the .357 BH should be dropped and superseded by a mid-frame.

Hi K22fan,

With all due respect and not be argumentative, but if I understand, your're not saying it won't work, just that Ruger won't build them because they can't produce a mid frame cyl that meets SAAMMI specs., which are maximum specs. That's why Ruger is a cut above all the rest I guess. You may be right, but one just doesn't find products made to max. specs. And if that's their policy, they must have made an exception for the .327 Mag 7 shot single seven they introduced recently on the single six frame. I heard the same reason why they wouldn't make a seven shot .327 mag. just before they did. The 38 & 44-40 SAMMI specs have been around a long time and are probably out of date.

Perhaps knowing that, neither Colt nor any of the many other clones see fit to build to SAMMI maximum specs. in the case of 38 & 44-40s. The Colt SAA has been chambered in the 38-40/44-40 for many years and still is.

Because the Colt cyl axis to chamber axis distance is the same as Ruger mid frame cylinders. In addition, the Ruger mid frame cylinder is .020" larger in diameter than the Colt cylinder. It not only works, but Rugers would be stronger for those cartridges. The rim diameter is not an issue, close together, yes, but there are no recessed chambered center fire Rugers any longer. All manner of cartridge brands in those cartridges have fit and been fired in the Colts over the years. And most of them in my mid frame Rugers.

I have Colt cylinders in 44/40 with separate cyl bushings that are fit to my Ruger .44spl mid size frames and regularly swap them into my Rugers to shoot. I have one 357 Ruger mid frame cyl reamed to 44/40 to make my NM .44 Spl Flat Top a convertible. There's just no problem with those cartridges in a mid frame Ruger.

Maybe Ruger will come around.

Or a lot of Ruger 357 mid frame guns will be sent back to Ruger to have an extra cyl fit so they can be rechambered to 38 & 44-40. And 44 Spls sent back for an extra cyl to rechamber to 44-40, since you'd want to shoot .429" bullets in your 44-40 ammo anyway for the 44 Spl barrel bores.

I'd buy a new mid frame .357 also about any new caliber they would make. I know it won't be a .41spl. I couldn't be that lucky............
