Hawkeye
I was watching another episode of "The Lone Ranger". Below is a picture of the sheriff. He thought the Ranger was a bad guy and was attempting to shoot him as he was galloping away. Fortunately he was too far away so the sheriff didn't shoot. But, notice the gun, in his attempt to cock and aim the gun he has it raised up so far that it is actually pointing in back of him.
I'm guessing that the director thought this made those shooting scenes more dramatic.
Another thing that seemed to be lost with time was using the word gun as a verb in sentences like "Are you going to gun him"? or "I'm going to gun him".
I can remember "way" back in time when my Dad was going hunting, my Mom would say that my Dad was going gunnin'.
Incidentally, that's DeForest Kelly on the right. (The Doc on Startrek)
