Somber thought!

Heard my preacher use this illustration this morning:

"Imagine a yardstick (that's a ruler three feet long, or 36") representing your life span, with each inch representing two years of your life, where would you be?"

Me, I'd have to be starting another yardstick.

I too have started on my second yard stick and am a half inch along on it.

I could be wrong, but I'm thinking that a Biblical generation is 60 Hebrew years....which numericaly speaking would be 360 days X 60 . That said, The Bible also teaches that there are certain things we can do which will "add to our days". Amoung them is "honor thy Father and Mother". There are other things too, I just can't remember them right off.....not enough coffee yet.

So Bob, what point was he trying to illustrate? Lead a better life and you live longer? Or your days are numbered? I'm sure he was positive. I talked to the pastor at my church, he said he spends 14 or 15 hours writing one sermon. Amazing. I don't think I could do that and speak so eloquently.

I guess I'm just over a quarter inch past my "Sell By" mark on the yardstick. Maybe I should have converted to metric 40 or 50 years ago. Then I'd still have some room left on the stick.

The trouble with that analogy, is you don't know how long the "yardstick" is. Units of measure, such as inches, are basically arbitrary and are meaningful only thru generally accepted custom, or by the dictate of some 'authority'. I doubt very much that God, or the universe, cares one whit how we humans define things like this. :wink:

Hmmmmm. Nita's mother died at age 100; my mother died at age 102; my oldest sister died at age 95; another sister is 92. There must be something to that!
