Kind of interesting there is a new book out on him. If I remember correctly Keith had a friend present at the Skagway shooting. Keith quoted Smith having an 86 in 45/70 or 45/90. Frank Reid had a 38/40. The new book says Smith had a 92 in 44/40 and a 41 Colt handgun. Reid is supposed just to have a 38. The story goes that another guy finished Smith off after Reid wounded him. I will have to get the book and do more research. You can Google Shootout at Skagway.

The Wikipedia entry on the gun fight says Smith had a M92 in 44-40 and a Colt New Army 41 and Reid had a ".38 revolver", make and model not specified. It also says that Reid wounded Smith in the initial exchange but another man, Jesse Murphy fired the fatal shot slightly later using Smith's own rifle.

I remember several stories from Keith about Smith. I also remember a photo of John Newman, an old time lawman. What I remember most about the photo was the eyes of Newman, how they seemed to jump off the page. He was not a young man in the photo, but he looked like a very tough SOB.
