Not being a collector, I usually don't pay attention to serial numbers, but I am wondering if anyone would venture a guess (other than because 'they can') why Ruger is using a .357 SN prefix on the newer .45 caliber blackhawks ...? Anyone? TKS, J

They have to use some number for a pre-fix. 357 just came up and it just came up for the .45s. It just one of the strange things that happens when dealing with numbers.
yes, it does seem a bit 'odd' that they would not ,somehow keep the serial numbers,, prefix in some sort of caliber assignment, I know this got them in trouble years ago when the PDs would run traces on any Ruger ,specially a 22 and it would come back in the "bad" part of the system, a 22 is a 22 is a 22, but they are each a different model...I KNOW as this happened to us, a Ruger 22 stolen in Canada, reported in Kansas City as "on the stolen gun " registry ,when in fact it was a revolver, and the gun stolen was a 22 semi auto,,,,,duh ( and I had to find this out through Florida PD) 8)
\SAME serial numbers,,,,along comes GCA'68 and they had to put prefixes on all their different models...yep, guess there are just so many numbers to go around, AND Ruger did "try" and go through the alphabet,then there S, D, and U guns, and on and on and on............ :roll:
just don't seem right to prefix a 45 , with 357.........(Bob C would have loved it)!! :wink:

At some point Ruger must have finally figured that they were going to run out of prefixes in their current scheme of things. It was late 2014 when they moved all of their protected sight Blackhawk models to the 38- prefix. What will be interesting to see is if when they finally reach 39-99999, if they will finish off where they left off in the 48- prefix, and then where they left off in the 51- prefix.
I guess they could also to where they left off with .41 Mags in the 41- prefix in 1980 when the NM .41's were merged with the NM .45 serial numbering.
All of this is kind of interesting when you consider after the move to 38- on the Blackhawks, Ruger did change their prefix system on a couple models to a xxxx- prefix (i.e. 0001- to 0005- on 10/22's and 1800- on the Precision Rifle.

And to totally leave the -(dash) out on the LCPs. When entering one of these into my books, need to really pay attention!

Yeah, that's another one. Ruger made some kind of change on the LCP that I'm not remembering right now, somewhere in the 377- prefix and went to the 3700xxxxx sequencing.
