Slamfires

I recently tripped over a comment stating that in addition to the classic Winchester Model 97 and an Early Ithaca, today's Remington 870 and Mossberg 500 guns can be slamfired. I kinda doubt this, but have not tried it out for myself. Anybody have more information?

Rem 870 has a 'disconnector' that prevents such incidents. Pretty sure the Mossy also has this feature.

Yep, Win '97 and Model 12 along with the older Ithaca 37's. Maybe some other old guns too, but the 870 and 500 series can't.

Both the 870 and Mossberg pump shotguns have disconnecters on the trigger mechanism preventing slam firing.

the Winchester 97, and probably the 93 could slam fire, as well as the Ithaca 37..... none of my mossberg's (mavericks), or Remington's do... I doubt this would be the case, because that old "product liability" thing....
I think (but not sure) the earlier Remington pumps.. pre 870, could be slam fired, but I never thought to try it....

Well, if the Ithaca 37 could be slam fired some older Rem pumps could as well as the 37 was patterned after the Rem model 17, a John Browning design.

On the early shotguns slam fire was considered an advantage. Think '97 WWI Trench Guns. The feature was probably killed due to some hunting reg somewhere.

I have an Ithaca M37 "Police Special" shotgun. Twenty inch barrel. Mag holds seven and one up the spout and yes, it can be slam fired. I have another that looks like a bargain store special with a Cutts Compensator, Mag holds five and one up the spout. I'm guessing it was made by High Standard but other than that, no clue. My favorite shotgun was a Winchester M97 that had split at the muzzle. Looked just like a season crack you see on old brass. A hacksaw and now it had a 22" barrel and it slam fired very nicely. I don't remember what happened with that gun. Probably someone made me an offer I could not refuse. Usually the case when a gun I like is nowhere around. BTW, all shotguns mentioned are 12 gauge.

Many moons ago my dad had a sawmill that was in an open sided building with a sheet metal roof. Some kids would hide in the edge of the woods that was on one end of the log yard and think it was funny to shoot the metal roof with a .22. Of course when the bullet would hit the roof whoever was there would hit the deck immediately.
I had a Winchester Model 12 pump with a barrel that was just over legal length and I brought it in my truck to the sawmill. I had it loaded with 6 in the magazine and 1 in the chamber and all 7 were #8 birdshot. A .22 round hit the roof and I replied by slamfiring the entire contents of the shotgun from my hip into the treetops. I could hear those kids running through the woods hollering "OH Chit!! He's got a SHOTGUN "!!! That was the last time anyone ever bounced a .22 round off our roof...

Partially correct. I have 4 Winchester 97s and, yes, you can slam fire them. I have a Remington 870 and it can not be slam fired. I do not know about the Ithacas or Mossbergs.

I had an SKS do a runaway mag dump due to slamfire.....it was an interesting experience, fortunately all rounds went done range in the proper direction.

I learned to shoot shotgun with a Model 12. I can only remember one time when I slam-fired it in my teenage years. That happened on a second shot at a flushing pheasant when I was wearing gloves. (I didn't connect with either round.)

I slam-fired my early 1950's Ithaca 37 once just to see. Can't say I'd do it again. It's a light gun and kicks.

Don't believe everything that the gun writers and internet experts say.....No on slam firing a the 870, 500, 590, or the Maverick....Well, not by design anyway. Might could if the firing pin stuck forward for some reason.
I worked a killing up in Austin back about 1982-1983 that involved an old WWII milsurp P38 which went full auto at an outdoor shooting range. Seems the guy had just bought it and him and his brother in law took it straight to the range to try out. It went full auto on the first shot causing the muzzle to rise and recoil to the left. The shooter's brother in law was standing beside him when it happened and the last round hit him right in the temple.....The cause was determined to be a rusty firing pin which stuck forward in it's channel within the breach.....rata-tat-tat.

   Shotguns that can be slam-fired include the Remington 870, Mossberg 500/590, and Winchester Model 1897, and Norinco HP9-1.
   
   I admit that I have never tried it with my Mossberg 590s- but now I will- ONCE. Need to find out what is true. These days I believe nothing except my own experiences when it comes to many things.
