Is there a frame size difference between old model 357 and old model 44 magnum (before the Super)? I read that there is, but I can not seem to verify. I am asking about the cylinder frame, not the grip frame. Is there a way to tell just by looking at one which frame it is? Thanks, Tom

Read this... yes, the .357 OM is smaller than the .41/.44/.45 size.

Which is why so many of us converted OM .357's into .44 Specials...

Tom.

The caliber roll mark on left side of frame.
Just by looking if you can't see the marking is by comparing the frame length with ejector rod length.
Or you have a trained eye from looking at so many.
If you can handle the gun, the way to tell is the cyl pin can be removed from the 357 mid-frame, while the OM 44 pin can not be w/o removing the ejector housing.

Just FYI, the New Vaquero and new model flat top frames except 41 and 44 mags are the same size as the OM 357 frame.

Thank you for replies.

I had seen a Bowen conversion on broker. The ad said it is on 357 frame, and the original roll mark is gone. The cylinder and frame look big to me like from a 44 magnum of the same era.

Here's the link:

Is there some other way to sell big vs small early frame, like where the tigger housing ends relative to the cylinder face, etc.?

That's a mid-frame and a nice one at that.

Yes, all Old Model .357's were built on a smaller frame than any other centerfire chambering.

There'd be no reason to build a .44Spl on the large frame.

here are some drawings done by our 'late' friend Roland Kirsch for the Bill Ross Ruger book done many years ago...........

gives you an idea of their size relation of the early, new model 357 frames...and yes , MANY 44 specials were done on these frames, new , and old model
