Single Action Suggestions?

Yes, it's the loading recipes I'm hunting for. I usually buy from Midway but once in a while someone really beats them and this is one of them. I've ordered 200 from PV.

My latest bug is wanting a CF single action. I've scratched the RF bug and will pick up a Super Wrangler from my FFL friend this afternoon. But very little clue on a CF choice. New or previously appreciated? What barrel length? What caliber? What finish? My criteria:

I don't like recoil. I won't be hunting or otherwise in need of major power. Once I get some brass I'll try my hand at loading from the left end of the recipes. So I want something with a light option, either by a ".xx special" option or just ability to be loaded light.

I won't be hunting or going on long hikes etc. just enjoying owning it to look at it and competing with myself and my last trip to the range so longer barrel or more weight isn't an issue.

I don't feel any need to change anything, not that I wouldn't if it will improve the shooting, but otherwise only having a great looking set of grips if it doesn't already.

I've never had a .4x caliber but always had a small bug about the .41 being interesting. And there's a less well-known .41 Special. But no clue if even that would be low enough recoil. And of course "everyone knows" a SA is "supposed" to be a .45 Colt.

So all advice on pros/cons to any/all SA models and which to focus on and which, if any, to ignore unless killer deals is appreciated. And with any suggested models advice on fair prices is an appreciated bonus. Thanks in advance to everyone who read all this and chooses to reply.

I second the 45 Colt suggestion. You can load 45 Cowboy Special to any 45ACP spec.
The problem with the "small magnums" (357 or 32) is the muzzle blast and ear-splitting noise, which may well account for "recoil sensitivity".

I don't see how you can beat that .41 deal however.

Well, I just got back from picking up my new Super Wrangler from my FFL friend. He has a Ruger 0405 .41 Mag Blackhawk 4-5/8 he bought as hog hunting backup. It's been fired a dozen rounds. I can get it, 100 rounds of ammo, a leather holster, a set of dies, a set of A-Zoom snap caps and maybe some brass and powder. Basically anything and everything he can find that's .41 Remington as he has no other to want any of it for. For $550. Not what I initially had in mind but too good a deal to not take I think.

That 0405 is on my wish list. I wish I had the chance to buy it.

My club's indoor range just went thru a renovation. Now magnums are not allowed. So, I shoot .38s and "specials". I have a load for .41 Special that is not only tame, but very accurate.

Of course, my only other holy grail is a Single Action Army. But at this time it is cost prohibitive unless I sold a couple of Blackhawks and Vaqueros. And that ain't gonna happen.

You can't go wrong with the .41 and all the stuff it comes with. I don't think you will find that deal again. I would think this deal is great regardless of whether you even shoot it ior not, as an investment. A true investment you could always trade/barter/sell at any time and make money on the deal. Go get it while it is available because it definitely will not be available long.....IMO.

I googled ".41 Special Load Data" and a bunch of references came up. It IS a "wildcat" of sorts. I have not seen any data in any of the books like Lyman.

I've always been partial to .44 for accuracy. So I might look for a .44 Mag that also uses .44 Special depending on how heavy you want to lift. Five to Six inches usually has an optimum sighting plain, and allows for a maximum of powder burn rates to achieve serious accuracy. JMHO YMMV.

I have 4 Colts. Three 3rd gens snd one 2nd Gen all in .357. I’ve had Ubertis, Piettas and Rugers but I worked my way up to Colts. I bought them all used. I never paid more than $1600 for one that was unfired. The others were all around $1000-1200

Well, I am saying yes, of course, and it's the elusive 4-5/8 .41 although I'd rather a longer barrel. That will be the next one. I've ordered 200 .41Spl cases from Powder Valley and a box of 210gr bullets from Xtreme. I don't know how much yet but the package also comes with some quantity of TiteGroup powder. I'll juggle my powder chart and move Unique to .41Spl which I have a recipe for and use other powders for the Unique "suspect list".

just make sure you keep the special cases separate from the mag cases. I have found as my age increases the difference between the 41 and 44 mag and special is harder to see. for some reason i can discern between 38 and 357 easily but not the afore mentioned.

I probably won't have any mag cases. I don't intend to shoot any of the mag ammo. I've ordered special cases and Xtreme bullets. Now I'm searching for load data to use for specials.

I dislike recoil, a lot. Bought a BH in 45C and have shot Ruger Only loads out of it with no issues. I had been told and have confirmed that a SA is meant to roll in your hand, will it does and that reduces felt recoil. YMMV.

If you just want it for the range .22LR makes a lot of sense.

If you want more power with light recoil. .22WMR is a good option.

Beyond that? What center fire cartridge do your other guns shoot?

I would pick up a Blackhawk in whatever cartridge you already stock.

My first 2 handguns were a convertible single six and a .357 Blackhawk. Still my first 2 picks. .22LR .22MAG .38spec to .357magnum. That’s a lot of versatility.

I've found that Magnum brass keeps the loading cylinder cleaner, the shorter special brass allows for more fouling. Takes less time on the reloading bench if all brass is of the same size. JMHO YMMV.

A few years ago, I bought an Uberti (I think, customer service went to Beretta) SAA clone. I found the deal on line, Uberti was adding a transfer bar and this is one of the old Colt style four click guns. Nice gun but I wish that I had looked harder for one with a shorter barrel.

I got one with the 7.5" barrel, like Matt Dillon. Very muzzle heavy.

That's my only advice on SAAs, get a short barrel.

I agree. Most of mine are 5 1/2, which I do like a lot but I wish one of my Single Sixes was the shorter one....

If it cost less than a Blackhawk, maybe. But with no sights it costs $210 more than a Blackhawk with actual sights.
