I needed to replace some (card board) siding , 4 peices , called and ask a company to come out and give me a quote. I wanted Hardy board or some thing like,
Said they would take down old siding and replace for ONLY $3000.00 , I am 75 yrs old and i know i am out of touch. Can i be this far out

Exactly. If you only have four pieces of ruined siding, replace it with the original and make sure you have a good paint covering. No way is Hardy Plank going to match hardboard siding or metal or vinyl siding of any kind, plus it is majorly more expensive. Hardboard siding works fine if it is kept PAINTED, which most folks seem to refuse to do, requiring residing, so they go with the cheapest they can find and again don't keep it painted. Painting a house is a pain, especially if you don't do a thorough job, which only means you get to do it again soon.

Siding is a big deal, but keeping a good quality coat of paint on it reduces the deal by a long ways. Painting is cheaper than residing. Again, replace with what you have, and make sure it is painted well.

the siding is 4'x8' , replacing 4 peices hardy board is 4'x8' (not rocket science) I almost laughed when said he would send two tec"s to do the job

I'm still having a problem with what you described as 'card board' siding.... and what you actually have.
From your first description and the last it sounds like the siding is panels 4 feet by 8 feet and you need 4 of those replaced.... then you say 4 pieces of hardy board is 4x8ft.... but hardy board also comes in 4ft x 8ft panels...... and if you were using 1ft x 8ft boards then don't they need to overlap if being laid horizontal or if vertical you need to cover the crack somehow. I think we need a picture.

there was a big lawsuit over this siding because it was made with pressed card board and would not stay together when damp..
need 4 sheets of 4"x 8" hardy board to replace it

Somewhat apples & oranges but my brother had a large double car detached garage resided last year. It was the cardboard type lap siding. He went with cement type lap siding. About $3K material & $5K labor.

Anybody remember Orangeburg pipe? Some more of that asphalt impregnated wood pulp type stuff. They used to use it for sewer pipe. At about the 35 year point my Dad's line collapsed. The house was built in '59.

I had some of that pipe on a septic system , I just knew it was some odd pipe

"An average 4×8 sheet of Hardie Board typically weighs around 33.3 lbs. /sq. ft. , so the total weight of a 4×8 sheet is approximately 266.4 lbs. Hardie Board is a brand of cement board used for exterior siding, also commonly referred to as cementitious backer board or Cement Board.

"Hardie Board typically comes in 4×8, 4×9, and 4×10 sheets, ranging in thicknesses from 1/4″ to 5/8″. The weight of the board is primarily dependent on its thickness, with the heaviest sheets weighing around 55-60 lbs. /sq.

"One of the main cons of Hardie board is its cost. It can be expensive compared to other siding options, and the cost increases with size. Installation is also a time consuming and labor intensive process, requiring specialist skills and materials."

about 4 years ago i replaced 5 sheets of the card boadby my self with hardy board, by myself. I was lot stronger , younger then, only 71.
too much for an old manLOL

I put up my own cement board under my front and rear eaves when I last painted and I would gladly have paid $3K for someone else to do it.

No, it's not 200 pounds per sheet. It's about 35 pounds...at least what I used was. Had to use a special saw blade AND a nail gun.
