Cubrock: Mostly it is sit in the car by a windmill. Since I'm beginning to get around better I did get out and get down with the quail fotos. Most of the close up part comes from good optics, patience, and zooming. I love to do it and have a lot of country to practice in!! Thanks to all, Gary

Pardon my ignorance Doc but we don't have quail like that up here in Idaho what is the variety shown in your great picture.

I lived in the hill country of Texas (also known as "God's Country...) and used to enjoy the Bob Whites.. they always sounded so cool when calling down by the creek or over in the pasture.
I seem to remember a Pharoah (spelling?) quail as well.. didn't see to many of them, but they were around; an old ranch hand pointed one out to me one day and was rather tickled to see 'em!
Loved the hill country.. seriously thinking of packing it all in, loading the camper and heading back... being "retired" does have a few advantages...

Love the Bob White pic. Brings back memories of hunting with my Dad. He used to whistle them up in the back yard. Almost brings a tear to my eye thinking about it. Amazing where a pic from half way across the country can take you. Thanks for posting!

Don't I know it!!! I was up in Burnet (spent my Freshman and Sophmore years in HS there..a long time ago...), and ran around Oatmeal, Marble Falls, Liberty Hill, etc. I know it's changed alot since I was last there, but fell in love with Texas years and years ago, and have always said that one of these days I'm going back.. plant my old worn out self under a cottonwood tree and enjoy my golden years!

Doc, What can I say. Another great shot. Who ever said that photography was not art, never seen one of your pictures. Yes you have a great lens and a great camera, but it that was all it took then my pictures would be as good as yours, but they are not. Doc, you have a great eye. Keep them coming.

Mr. Bobwhite.... my grandparents farm in NE Oklahoma was full of them. When granddad cut down a tree for firewood, he would always stack the limbs into brushpiles and never burned them. Just left them as cover for the quail and rabbits.
Come quail season, we'd walk up to a brushpile and just give it a kick and those piles would explode! A dozen or two quail would take off in all different directions!

Nice picture doc, I just picked up a new 55 * 250mm IS lense for my EOS Rebel XS today. I've been watching this sucker at the local walmart for some time now. Went in there today and it was marked down $50. Neadless to say, I bought it on the spot. And when I ran my discount card threw, I got 10% more off that. Life is good.

Last time down that road for me. Next time I go west (young man, or old fart) it'll be through Denver, where I calculate there's a 50/50 chance I may stop for gas and just decide not to leave. Call me crazy, but the air smells better and the water tastes better too, up there in the Mile High City. 8)
Canon shot of the odometer in my Volvo at 149,999 miles, not sure exactly where in the country I was though.

Beautiful, as always. I was just wondering, do you depend on the autofocus or do you focus manually? I have a Canon EOS t1i and I can't depend on the autofocus to produce that sharp a picture. I try to focus manually, but the new digital SLRs do not provide a precise focusing grid like the old film SLRs did.
Whatever it is that you are doing, keep it up.
