Shipping a #1

Curious what you folks have used or would use to ship a Ruger #1? REALLY wanna get a long put off one on it's way to get worked on finally. All my cases are large and not exactly what I'd consider sizable to ship. Had a thought about using a round cardboard tube which driveshafts come in. They're VERY think and extremely durable and don't scream "rifle". However, I'd still prefer an actual protective case. So...

Recently sent a rifle in a cheap $10 padded hard case from Walmart, FFL put it in a shipper, arrived at destination with no problems. Cheap insurance to protect a valuable gun.

Anytime I do that I try to use a factory box with the outer shipping sleeve. If I don't have one I check at the gunshop to see if there is any that fit. Your idea of the round tube sounds as good as anything to me also.

The question is...whatcha doin to the No.1?? Inquiring minds want to know!

Let me just say I'm NOT a fan of the .30-06 chamber it is now. :wink:

Finding a suitable shipping carton can be a pain in the patooty. I found a plastic gun case in it's own cardboard box for $20. Nylon reinforced tape for extra reassurance and even then bubble wrapped the rifle itself. Buyer is sending me $20 for the new case.
I WISH someone made an affordable protective box with foam (egg crate) interior just for this purpose. Gun shops have told me I'd be surprised if I saw how sparsely some guns are that get shipped to them!
One of the BEST boxes I've had are Beeman air rifle boxes, BETTER than many firearm boxes!

BINGO! That's what I do too. :wink: Except I use the plastic case too. I consider it added insurance.

If you don't need to send the wood, take it off and the tube works well. I just shipped a #3 like that.

I was wondering about that. Walmart has a $9.99(?) plastic rifle case and I had heard they might come 'shipped to your store' in a box. Will try ordering one today!

Thanx fellas! Thinking I'll go with a regular soft case and pack that into my tube. Should be very well protected, virtually crush proof unless they run it over with the truck and it won't scream "rifle" (probably my biggest concern). Now if I can just stop procrastinating...

When I walk the aisles of gun shows, I will pick up used $10 cases or even $5 cases for just this purpose. I have a few stockpiled. :wink:

FWIW, I've been using USPS shipping tubes for over 15 years (and over 10 long guns) w/o any damages/issues.

When just sending the barreled action (no wood/stock or scope), the best way I've found is to obtain (free) a delta-shaped shipping tube (36" long) from your local US P.O., pad/wrap the barreled action with bubble wrap, with extra attention/padding at both ends of the tube, and mail it US Priority Mail, Insured.

Most USPO's have them in their lobby, but you might have to ask the Postal Clerk to give you one (or order one/more online from USPS.com).
